Lauren Reimer, of New Braunfels TX, swept through the heptathlon relentlessly with a new Great Southwest record score of 5,357 points. It was a stark contrast from last year's GSW at Tempe AZ, when she pulled a muscle warming up and had to withdraw before the first event. "I had to come back and prove myself," Reimer said. And did she ever, winning all seven events, setting herself up nicely for the USATF Junior Nationals next month, and breaking her own personal record. Reimer wants to place 1-2 in the Jr Nationals to make the US team for an international meet in England. She also wants to break her sister's national HS record of 5,493 (Kendra Reimer, 1998) before going on to Georgia Tech next year. "Oh, yeah, do I ever," Reimer said. "She always tells me, 'Do good, but not too good.' "
In the decathlon, there was no redemption, just soaring success for Donovan Kilmartin of Eagle ID. Only a sophomore, Kilmartin is still in the straight upward cycle of his career when even a forlorn discus or javelin throw brings a chuckle instead of a frown. That's because he conquers most events with ease and grace. Just off a 4-gold performance at the Idaho State Meet, Kilmartin piled up the second highest decathlon score in GSW's 26 years.
