Wilson Long Beach CA sr Lashinda Demus has been stalking the national record in this event for 2 years. This time, she had it in her grasp as she roared around the oval and came through the stretch a full hurdle ahead of anyone else.

Demus has huge lead in mid-stretch

Before the last hurdle, Demus hesitated and stutter stepped.
Her mother said that Lashinda couldn't see the last hurdle well
since she races without glasses.
"I'm going right out to get her some contacts," Mrs. Demus said.

Demus finishes in 40.70, giving her four of the seven fastest
300 meter hurdles ever, but not the record (40.18, Leslie Maxie CA, 1984) she wants so badly.
