by John Dye As a freshman last year, Megan Kaltenbach was Colorado's secret. She won the state cross country championship with one of the best times ever on her way to a soccer game. She skipped the Foot Locker cross country championships in favor of a soccer tournament. In the spring of 2000, she was Colorado state champion at 3200 meters, but did not journey to Sacramento for the Golden West or Raleigh for the Foot Locker Outdoor championships to get national acclaim. Kaltenbach's first exposure to national elite class running was the Great American Cross Country Festival in Charlotte last October. The Smoky Hill Aurora soph startled observors with a second place finish in the Race of Champions, staying with winner Alicia Craig for half the race. This set off a debate over priorities as Megan, who was then only practicing running 3 days a week because of her soccer schedule, listened to her mother and coaches plead the potential of running. This year, running is moving up to first priority, and the results are gratifying. Last month Kaltenbach won the Nike Indoor Classic 2 mile in 10:32.89. And here, she ran away from a high octane field that included Hoover Glendale CA sr Anita Siraki, defending Raleigh 2-mile champion; Bingham UT jr Laura Zeigle, national junior women's cross country champion; and Baldwin PA jr Julia Pudlin, a Pennsylvania champion and national Foot Locker finalist. Kaltenbach won by 5 seconds in 10:11.97 with impressive negative splits of 5:11 and 5:00. Afterward, Siraki asked Kaltenbach, "Are you really only a sophomore?" Siraki rallied for second, obviously feeling the effects of running anchor for Hoover's distance medley relay team in the sunny afternoon Open Division. But she was still pleased that she ran a PR 4:46 for 1600 meters in the DMR. There was a method to her madness as she and her coach are evaluating whether to try to double at 1600 and 3200 meters in the California State Meet. "This tells me where I am," Siraki said, but she didn't say what that was. Siraki was uncharacteristically back in the pack for much of the 3200. "I had to fight so hard to catch up; I was in lane 2 most of the way." Watching the starter: (from left) Kaleena Lee, Rancho
