Lots of familiar faces: defending national outdoor champion Alicia Craig, Campbell County WY senior, prevailed somewhat routinely in a swift 4:46.49 over a deep field with 9 girls finishing under 5:00. Newport Harbor CA sr Amber Steen, fresh off a win over Anita Siraki in the Azusa Pacific Meet of Champions, was second in 4:47.61, just ahead of San Lorenzo Valley CA sr Ale Barrientos 4:47.88, returning to last year's form. Then came Thomas Jefferson VA sr Kelley Otstott 4:51.32, Bingham UT jr Jackie Zeigle 4:51.70, Mountain Pointe AZ jr Sally Meyerhoff 4:53.54 (2nd trip to California in 2 weeks after being runner-up to Sara Bei at Stanford), Oakland jr Clara Horowitz 4:56.01, Murrieta Valley CA freshman sensation Liza Pascuito 4:57.75, and Hilltop Chula Vista CA sr Desiree Davila 4:58.05.

Davila set the pace for most of 2 laps

Craig took the lead at the halfway point, run in 2:24.

Halfway, 3rd through 6th, were Barrientos, Zeigle, Steen, and Otstott,
just a few paces behind Craig and Davila.

After 1200 meters run in 3:35, Craig was 30 meters ahead.

End of 3 laps, chase group was Zeigle (blue), Barrientos (red), and Otstott (white).

Nearing finish, the gap narrowed and Steen (blue) rallied to get second ahead of Barrientos.
