Girls 400 meters

Henderson 52.51, Perkins 53.21 !

National record holder Monique Henderson, Morse San Diego CA sr, avenged her only loss in a HS 400 meter race (Arcadia last year) by beating Gahr Cerritos CA jr Angel Perkins, 52.51 to 53.21, with another deadly stretch run. Reminiscent of the record 400 meters (50.74) at the California State Meet last year, the two girls come off the turn stride for stride, possibly a narrow lead for Perkins. But Henderson maintains her form rock steady to the finish and Perkins breaks down a bit.

A reporter asked Henderson how she digs in like that and she answered, "Pure determination. Will power and determination."

Henderson also said, "I'm very, very tired" as both girls slumped against the fence for a long time after the race, unwilling to answer questions. This was Henderson's first big race after a long layoff since the Olympic Trials last July when she made the US Olympic 4x400 relay team.
