Bobby Lockhart cruises in 8:57.08

Bobby Lockhart took no chances this time. In his last two big races (Millrose Games mile and Nike Indoor Classic mile), the Winchester VA junior appeared to have the race won into the stretch and was startled to be caught in the last split second. This time, Lockhart took firm control and won in hand by more than two seconds in 8:57.08, with Chandler Goodwin UT 8:59.57 also breaking 9 minutes. Then came sophomore Yong-Sung Leal, of Arroyo San Lorenzo CA, who set all the early pace and gave way very grudgingly in the late going to finish in 9:02.15.

Lockhart seemed pleased after. He was hoping for 8:55 but a slow 70-second third lap, the only lap of eight not in the 60s, blocked that goal. The approximate lead splits: 64, 67, 70, 67, 67, 68, 67, and 67.

First three laps had the same picture: Leal leading a big pack by 20 meters.

Lockhart took the lead just as they finished 1600 meters in 4:28, with Haas moving up too.

After Leal briefly regained the lead, Lockhart and Haas passed him in the stretch of lap 5

Home Stretch: Goodwin has moved into second, Haas has dropped back, and
