There were track and field meets aplenty this past weekend throughout the
state as almost every school completed their last major tuneups to find out
who's got game before their district championships begin next week.
There were four invitationals in this area alone this past weekend, led by
the 20th Annual T.C. Williams Invitational in Alexandria with 30 schools
competing. DeMatha (MD) was the boys team winner with 99 points followed by
Gaithersburg (MD) in second with 75 points with Robinson the top local
finisher in third place at 50 points while Dover (DE) fourth with 49 points
and host T.C. Williams placed fifth with 46 points.

On the girls side, Maryland schools swept the top three places with Largo
scoring 70.5 points for the team victory followed by Elizabeth Seton in
second (57 points) and Gaithersburg third (56) with Cave Spring of Roanoke
fourth at 51 points and West Potomac the top local finisher on the girls side
with a fifth place total of 48 points in scoring through eight places on a
10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1 basis.

DeMatha secured the boys victory with just one victory among the seventeen
events. The Stags won the 4x400 meter relay with a time of 3 minutes, 21.28
seconds but had plenty of depth in other events paced by second place
finishes in the 100 dash by freshman Anthony Wiseman (10.96), discus throw by
Marlon Powell (142 feet even), Josh Wilson in the 300 hurdles (38.90) and
their 4x800 (8:12.93) and 4x100 relays (42.79).

Runnerup Gaithersburg had the Don Futrell outstanding performer award
winner in senior Damon Hill who won the long jump (21-8.5) and 100 meter dash
(10.94) as well as anchoring the winning 4x100 relay for Gaithersburg (42.40)
while Hill's senior teamate Bryan Steel posted an impressive double in
winning the 800 run at 1:54.83 and finishing second in the 400 dash (48.01) .

Third place Robinson was paced by junior Steve Huntzinger, who was a double
victor once again in capturing the shot put (55-7) and discus throw (169-7)
while fourth place Dover received one of the best performances of the day
from senior Jason Lilly who won both the 400 dash in 47.53 and then 200 dash
in 21.86 after running 21.43 in the morning prelims.

Fifth place T.C. Williams had their team of Timothy Nunn, Chidi Moumaife,
Nulie McCarthy win the 4x800 relay in a state automatic qualifying time of
8:03.17 with McCarthy also notching a state auto qualifier in the 800 run
with his second place finish in 1:56.71. The other local winners were both
from the West Springfield distance corps as senior James Feeney put forth a
strong burst in the final 150 meters to capture the 1,600 run at 4:25.73 and
Spartans junior Jeff Day ran a state auto of 9:39.61 to claim the 3,200 run.

Girls winner Largo piled up enough points for their victory from just the
efforts of senior India Ransom, sophomore Sirdonea Davis and their running
relays. Davis grabbed a trio of second place finishes in the triple jump
(34-10), 300 hurdles (44.20) and 200 dash (25.21) while Ransom won the
quality laden 400 dash in 56.05 and anchored the winning 4x100 (47.22) and
4x400 relays (3:58.29) with Largo also taking the 4x800 relay as well in
9:47.66.

Runnerup Seton was strongest in the field events with seniors Michelle
Nowden winning the long jump (18-5.25) and Tyishua Johnson taking the triple
jump (35-7) while third place Gaithersburg recorded victories in the discus
throw (96-8) and sophomore Nina Warren the 100 dash (12.12).

away with victories from three individuals as junior Ashley Reyer won the 100
hurdles (15.47), sophomore Jennifer Beury the 1,600 run (5:12.40) and senior
Bridget Tainer the 3,200 run (11:26.71) while fifth place West Potomac was
paced by senior Dee Dee Richard's second place in the long jump (16-11),
third place in the triple jump (34-7) and fifth in the 400 dash (1:00.02).

Senior Junique Morris of T.C. Williams was named the winner of the Bev
Lawson girls outstanding performer award after getting two state auto
qualfiers in winning the 200 dash (24.77) and finishing fourth in the 400
dash (57.32). Hayfield junior Ashley Crocker was the other local winner with
her victory in the shot put (38-7.5) while Centreville sophomore Dacia Barr
had a strong surge in the final 100 meters to run an excellent time of
2:14.66 in the 800 run, but could not overtake James Monroe's Shylan Bumbrey
as that outstanding freshman posted a hard fought victory at 2:13.91.

Langley played host to the Fifth Annual Saxon Classic on Saturday with
fourteen area schools in attendance. Oakton claimed the girls team trophy
with 121 points followed by Jefferson (91), Forest Park (68), Madison (49)

the 17 events to easily win with 121 points.

In the girls portion, Lake Braddock had only one individual winner with

the 4x100 relay (49.27) and the 4x800 relay with Meredith Brill, Kelly

in the other events to prevail over the runnerup Indians.

winning both the 100 dash (12.63) and 200 dash (25.40); senior Latesha

for their winning 4x800 relay squad (7:31.89) and placed seventh in the high
jump (6-3.25) and tenth in the long jump (20-11.75).

With just two more weekends remaining before seedings are announced for the
NCAA Championships, a cluster of former area stars have strong positions in
the current rankings.

UCLA's Sheena Johnson (Gar-Field) has now moved into second place in the
women's 400 hurdles after running 56.56 last weekend and Johnson is also a
member of the number three ranked 4x400 relay team for the Bruins (3:32.02)
while Texas sophomore Alyssa Aiken (Chantilly) is part of both the second
seeded 4x100 (43.89) and 4x400 relays (3:31.97) for the Lady Longhorns.
The University of Florida is well represented locally and nationally with
Rickey Harris (Centreville) ranked second in the men's 400 dash (45.09) and
third in the 400 hurdles (49.61). Faith Rein (Centreville) is currrently
seventh in the women's 400 dash (52.43) and Gators freshman Krystle Moss
(Jefferson) is tied for tenth in the high jump (5-10.5) while the University
of Virginia's Dawn Cleary (Woodbridge) currently has the third fastest time
in the women's 3,000 meter run at 10:03.13.

for the entire indoor season, Michigan freshman Alan Webb finished fifth in
the 800 run (1:49.46) at the Jesse Owens Classic in Columbus, Ohio this past
Sunday. Simon Kimata of Oregon was the winner in 1:47.25 with Webb's fellow
Wolverines freshman Nate Brannen second in 1:48.92.
