The better than expected winter weather was nice enough to prevail
once
again last weekend, enabling the area's district track and field
championships to start and finish unhindered by any foul weather
cancellations.
In the Concorde District track and field championships held last
Thursday
and Friday at the Prince George's Sports and Learning Complex in
Landover, MD
the strong Oakton girls squad along with the Centreville boys were
victorious
as expected.
The Oakton girls piled up 154.5 points for the win with Jefferson
also
hitting triple figures with their 112 second place points. South
Lakes scored
67.5 points for third followed by Centreville (47), Westfield (37),
Herndon
(35) and Chantilly (15).
Oakton had a pair of double winners in junior Kathleen Woody and
senior
Bonnie Meekins. Woody won the triple jump with a Northern Region
leading mark
of 37 feet, 9 inches and the 55 meter dash in 7.30 seconds. Meekins
set a new
meet record in capturing the high jump at 5-7 and also won the 55
hurdles in
8.80.

the 1,600 run
in 5:07.41 and came back 35 minutes later to claim the 1,000 run

challenge
from second place Oakton at 107 points with Jefferson third with

Centreville senior David Sullivan paved the way for the Wildcats
as he
captured four events. Sullivan set a new meet record in winning
the long jump
at 21-5 and also grabbed first place in the high jump (6-2), pole

(15-0) and 55 hurdles (8.01).
The Wildcats had sophomore Daniel Bailey as a multiple record setter
as he
won both the 55 dash (6.51) and 300 dash (35.22) in meet record
times and
Bailey also ran leadoff on Centreville's record setting 800 relay

(1:32.60).
Other impressive wins were posted by Oakton's Phil Gaeta and Richard

which
was accomplished off of a relatively slow 67 second first 400 and

put up the second best time in the region in the 1,000 run just
35 minutes
later in finishing second to Smith in 2:32.73.
For his part, Smith overtook Gaeta in the final 100 meters of the
1,000 run
to win in 2:32.49 and the South Lakes senior also anchored the meet
record
setting 4x800 (8:03.78) and 4x400 (3:29.61) relays.
