Pearl Watts' Report

Virginia State Cross Country Championships

Races held Saturday in The Plains on 5,000 meter (3.1 miles) all
grass, increasingly hilly Great Meadow course. Team scoring computation is
determined among the sixteen state meet qualifying teams for each race.
Individual qualifers from their respective regional meets from the previous
week do not factor into the team scoring. [Example: In the girls AAA race,
Robinson's Joanna Rodgers finished seventh overall and Sam Ference of the
Rams was eighth overall but Rodgers counts as one point in the team scoring
and Ference as two points since they were the first two finishers among
runners competing with full (five finishing runners) teams.

In the girls AAA race, Oakton's Keira Carlstrom won her second consecutive
individual title in running 14 seconds faster than the previous year.
Carlstrom hit 5:57 at the mile mark and 12:01 at two miles with her winning
time of 18:18 for 5k resulting in a 5:53 average per mile.

In boys AA, Handley senior Bobby Lockhart recorded splits of 4:40 for the
first mile and 9:34 at two miles enroute to winning an unprecedented fourth
consecutive individual state title. Lockhart's overall time of 15:10 results
in a 4:52/mile average and his time on the Great Meadow course has only been
bettered by Alan Webb of South Lakes, who ran 15:03 in 2000 and 15:08 in 1999.
In the girls A race, Brentsville won their seventh straight team title.
Compiled by Pearl Watts.
