Notes: Meets held Wednesday at Burke Lake Park on their 2.98 mile course. The
top four teams and top fifteen individuals in each district for both boys and
girls automatically qualified for the Northern Region Championships to be
held at Burke Lake Park on Thursday, November 1. Compiled by Pearl Watts.

Patriot: The West Springfield boys won in convincing style with the
Robinson girls having to work hard for their victory in the Patriot District
while the Yorktown girls and Wakefield boys rolled again in the National
District to highlight the championships held yesterday at Burke Lake Park.
The West Springfield boys almost halved the next best score with their
victory at 32 points. Robinson was the runnerup with 59 points while Lake
Braddock finished third with 70 points and West Potomac was fourth at 110
points to secure the final regional qualifying spot.
West Springfield junior Jeff Day led the Spartans as he captured the boys
individual title in 15 minutes, 54 seconds over the 2.98 mile course with
Day's senior teammate Bryan Witt staying close to the lead for most of the
race to finish second in 16:03. West Springfield also had John Cook in sixth
place (16:24) as the Spartans claimed six of the first fourteen spots.
Spartans coach Vic Kelbaugh said, "the times the team ran are certainly not
outstanding, but any time you can put six runners in the top fifteen in the
Patriot District, they have done a good job."
Second place Robinson was paced by senior Kevin McHale in fourth place
(16:18) while third place Lake Braddock received a huge lift from James
McLellan as the Bruins junior ran his best race of the season in finishing
third (16:09).

Although the sultry late October weather may have affected some of the
Patriot boys times, the record breaking heat did not seem to affect Kelly
Swain of Lake Braddock as she won the individual title for the second year in
a row, this time shaving 18 seconds off her time from last year with her win
in 17:56.
Swain started out in control and then seized the lead at the half mile
mark, which she covered in 2:43. The Bruins junior kept the heat on as she
rolled through the two mile mark in 11:45 with a 35 second advantage over the
rest of the field, pushed that to a 40 second advantage with 700 yards to go
and won by about 200 yards.
Robinson won the team title by less than a comfortable margin in what is
probably the strongest girls district in the state as the Rams scored 54
points. West Springfield ran strong throughout to grab second with 61 points
with Lake Braddock third at 64 points and Hayfield filling out the regional
qualifying field in fourth (74).
Robinson was sitting on 55 points at the two mile mark and were able to
hold their point position for the final mile led by junior Sam Ference's
third place finish in 18:46 as the Rams put four runners among the top
fifteen.
West Springfield senior Mo Hagan showed her cross country capabilities with
her second place time of 18:38 to lead the Spartans while Lake Braddock
freshman Sarah Rothe was her team's number two runner behind Swain (4th;
18:55) and sophomore Morgan Phelan was the top finisher for Hayfield in fifth
place at 19:06.

National: The Yorktown girls captured the district title for the third year
in a row, grabbing five of the first ten spots enroute to claiming victory
with 25 points. The Patriots went one-two on the individual side with
sophomore Katie Read making a late surge to move up one spot from her
runnerup finish of last year to win in 19:53 with Yorktown's Anna Rosen
finishing second (20:00) and Stuart junior Pam Davis a close third in 20:03.
Wakefield jumped all the way up from their seventh place team finish of
last year to notch second place this time around at 74 points with senior
Kristina Rios the top finisher for the Warriors (4th; 20:32). Edison was
third at 84 points and Washington-Lee finished fourth with 99 points paced by
Kerstin Kraft's sixth place run (20:56).

Wakefield dominated on the boys side as they captured the district title
for the fifth year in a row. The Warriors put six runners among the top ten
led by senior Javier Rios in second place (16:27), Messeret Mengesha in third
(16:46) and defending champion Abdi Dubed fourth (16:50).
Senior Randy Carroll of Falls Church was the individual winner, breaking
away from the Wakefield trio after the two mile mark and producing the second
fastest boys time of the day at 15:59.
Mount Vernon moved up from their fifth place finish of last year to get
second (70 points) with Johnny Dawson the top finisher for the Majors (7th;
17:12). Falls Church moved on to the regional meet with their third place
total of 101 points and Yorktown grabbed fourth at 104 points with Edward
McGaffigan (8th; 17:14) the top scorer for the Patriots.
