In the first showcase of the Indoor season, the performances kicked
up a
notch at the Year-End-Special held at Lehigh University. There were
several
records, plus some national caliber marks. The sprints highlighted
the
talents of Lester Ceasar of Abington, who set a meet record in the
400 with
his 49.32, topping Troy Roberson's 1999 record. Caesar also anchored
his
team's 4x400 squad to a 3:28.17, a meet record with a 47-high split
according to one observer. North Penn was second at 3:29.01. Bensalem's
John
Thompson went 7.10 in the 60 meter dash, just .03 up on Bishop McDevitt's
Tariq Boston. John Fudge, Simon Gratz, set a meet record with an
8.21 in the
60 meter hurdles. Cardinal O'Hara set a meet record in the Sprint
Medley
with a 3:43.16. In the field events, Conestoga's Steve Meyers continued
a
strong, consistent season by going 54-11.25 in the Shot Put, while
the top
three Triple Jumpers exceeded 44 feet: Mike Whitehead, Norristown
(46-3),
Galen Rivers, Great Valley (45-6), and Blake Taylor, Methacton (44-1).
Taylor also won the high jump at 6-4. Other notable performances
included
William Tennent's 4x200 time of 1:33.88, and the win in the 3000
by
Coatesville's Rob Robertson at 9:01.98.
The girls also set four meet records, again, mostly in the sprint
events.
The assault was led by Penn Wood's Danielle Rodgers who looked stronger
than
ever in breaking the 400 record 57.2 of Angel Patterson (William
Penn) set
in 1995 with a 56.90. She was pushed to the record by William Penn's
Juanita
Broaddus, second in 57.03, and Central's Morgan Cephis, third in
58.86.
Juanita Broaddus got her meet record in the 200 with a stunning
25.05 in the
200, breaking the meet record of 25.62. William Penn's Karina Francis
set
the 60 meter dash record in 7.65, while Penn Wood's Chioma Nuaneshuida
was
just feet back in 7.80. Chichester's Danielle Price took the 60
meter
hurdles in 9.42. Coatesville's Kelly O'Connell showed track strength,
winning the 3000 in 10:42.73. In the relays, William Penn took all
three of
the shorter distances, winning the Sprint Medley in a meet record
4:14.97,
the 4x200 in 1:44.0, and the 4x400 in 4:05.75 (Great Valley 4:07.99,
Central
4:09.09). Sarah Kirsh, Pennsbury, threw the shot 36-2.50. Great
Valley's Jen
William took the high jump with a leap of 5-4. And Pennsbury's Kourtney
Marquis became the first PA girl to clear 10' in the Pole Vault
this season.
