If
you can't get excited about XC this time of the season... Next week in Hershey,
we'll have:Cickay vs. Saterstad vs. Madia vs. Bricker, and more. Weilacher vs.
Blood, Mazzacco vs. Robertson vs. Bair vs. Cavanaugh, and more. Christensen vs.
the Twins. Cedar Cliff vs. Council Rock vs. Lebo. And it'll be on TV the following
week. North Penn upsets Council Rock (just a slight upset) at District
1. Jessica Cickay with 17:50.7 in 30 mph winds. Rob Robertson
of Coatesville, in same conditions, goes 15:37. Cedar
Cliff boys - Patrick Philbin, John Butler and Andy Brehm
lead eventual winner Mark Turner, Cumberland Valley just after the mile on 10/27.
The wind was gusting, but not as bad as at District 1 the day before

District
10 - The snow, hail, wind and mud couldn't
stop the pre-race favorites from what they considered their rightful places
- first. Andy Weilacher, who many see as the top male runner in PA this
year, AA or AAA, took first in 16:18 to lead his Eisenhower team to
the title 44-83 over West Middlesex. In AA girls,
Jesi Christensen, the defending AA state champ, won another title with
her 19:41, but Eisenhower's top two rsunners, Heather Wilmth, and Rachel
Tutmaher, took 2nd and 3rd to lead their team to the District championship
with 116 points. Titusville was 2nd with 133. In
the boys' AAA race, brothers Brian (10th grade), and Eric (11th grade) Soder,
went one-two, separated by less than half a second in 16:49. The effort helped
their Harborcreek team to the district title by a single point, 56-57
over General McLane. And in girls' AAA, Kelly Richards, General McLane,
took the individual title in 19:51, while the one-two McDowell punch of Stephanie
Strub (12th), and Emily Evans (9th), went two-three to lead the Erie team to
the AAA championship. October 27, 2001 - District
3 @ Hersheypark (site of state championships 11/3) - Cedar
Cliff is for real. And the showdown next week with Council Rock (and others)
at the Hersheypark course will be a great race. Patrick Philbin led the Colts
with his second place 16:33 on the tough course, followed within 1:09 by their
fifth for a total of just 60 points. Also qualifying for the AAA trip to States
were Red Land, Cedar Crest, Cumberland Valley and Carlisle. CV's Mark Turner
took the individual title in 16:24 after battling Philbin and the Colt's John Butler
most of the way. (Nearly 2000) Footlocker finalist Angie Saterstad, running
for the first year with Hershey (and feeling ill much of the way), showed the
talent that XC fans have come to expect, taking the AAA girls title in 19:18,
the fastest of the day. Red Lion's Kate Papenberg, a soph, was second, 20 seconds
back. Cumberland Valley took the team title with 103 points, and will be joined
by Chambersburg, Carlisle, Hempfiield, and Manheim Township. Ryan Blood, the
smooth East Pennsboro sophomore, and defending D3 AA champ, repeated with a
16:34, running just hard enough to win comfortably. Eastern York took the team title
by just five points over Wyomissing. The two teams will be joined at States
by York Suburban. And the Wyomissing girls, a definite AA dynasty in the making,
took care of business, led by the other twin, Amy, in 19:42. Debbie, who was
7th this year, won the District title in 2000. Wyo went 1-5-6-15-16 for just
43 points, over 100 better than York Suburban and Tulpehocken. October
27, 2001 - Districts 5&6 Championships @ Indian Valley Middle School,
Milroy -AA GIRLS - Bishop Guilfoyle sophomore Sonja Hinish
captured her second District Championship after finishing 10th in last year's
state meet. She won in a close race over Forest Hills junior Leanna Nastase, who
should also contend for medalist honors after finishing 33rd last year. The
Central Cambria girls repeated as district champs and will be joined at states
by Bishop Guilfoyle, who is led by Hinish and fellow sophomore Angela Greaser.
AAA GIRLS - Hollidaysburg freshman Megan Duffett won her first district title
as the Altoona girls ran away with the team title. AA BOYS - United and Forest
Hills punched their tickets to states in a close race. Three medalists from
last year's state meet will be heading back: Westmont sophomore Dave Mock,
who was the top freshman at last year's state meet in 24th place, captured
his first district title. Mock's junior teammate Steve Gonzalez was 17th last year.
Finally, Blairsville senior Bryan Herdman will return to states after just
missing medalist honors as a sophomore and grabbing 10th last year. Forest
Hills' Jake Strayer and Josh Beyer also look strong as does West Branch's Allen
Pryde. AAA BOYS - Altoona captured their ninth straight district title in a
runaway. Altoona junior Bobby Boston also captured his third individual title
and expects to improve on his twelfth place finish from last year's meet. He
also was a medalist as a freshman two years ago. Partial results courtesy of
Douglas Hoover.
October 26, 2001 - District
1 @ Lehigh University - The winds blew briskly through the
Lehigh Valley as the North Penn girls finally got the better of nationally
ranked Council Rock. But even with a sub-par performance, the Rock finished
second in the district. The surprise to many, but not to those who saw their
spring 4x800, was Haverford, coming off a strong Central League meet to finish
third in the district with two SRs, a JR, and two SOs. Great Valley overcame
an unexpected performance from a key runner to get 4th. Villa Maria took the
final state berth over the next three strong teams, Hatboro-Horsham, Wissahickon,
and Merion Mercy. As expected, Jessica Cickay of Council Rock led from the
start and won in 17:50.7. In today's winds, that time is especially impressive.
Coatesville's Kelly O'Connell was 2nd, while Kim Malcolm, Villa Maria, and
Erin Franklin, Wissahickon, joined her under 19:00. Defending District 1 champ
Katie Ewart of Upper Dublin continues to suffer the effects of a sinus infection
and did not race. Rob Robertson of Coatesville ran
an impressive 15:37.3 to win by 12 seconds over Pottsgrove's Corry Rogers.
Council Rock's one-two punch of Mike DiDio and Rob Hampson went three-four
to lead their annual powerhouse to a win.D1 page. Henderson, Coatesville, Great
Valley and Hatboro-Horsham filled out the state slots. In girls AA,k Gwynedd
Mercy put five in the top 13 to get a state berth behind the 3rd place finish
of Meghan Bishop. St. Basil's Lynn Morelli won going away in 18:45.3. Devon
Prep cut it a bit closer by taking St. Pius by only three points to get the
lone AA boys slot. But Pius #1 Matt Bintner ran 17:03.4 for the title. October
25, 2001 - District 9 @ Clarion - North Clarion
took the District 9 AA boys title by over 30 behind the 16:30 by Ben Weaver.
Nicole Selker, Clarion-Limestone, won the AA girls title in 21:13. But Kane's
Tonia Hartzell led her team to the district championship. Bradford took both
AAA titles. In the girls race, 1 1 Renea Shaffer of Punxsutawney won in 21:19.
St. Mary's Rob Meyer ran a 17:23 for the boys AAA title. October
25, 2001 - District 7 (WPIAL) Championships @ Slippery Rock University
- Despite wind and a defending state champ for competition, Baldwin's Dan Mazzocco
continued his quest, and his winning ways, taking the AAA WPIAL (District 7)
Championship. But that defending state champ, Shawn Cavanaugh, of Mount Lebanon,
is leading quite a team. With his 3rd place finish, they continued their win
streak by just three points of a Sam Bair led Shaler team. Mount Lebanon ran
into the North Allegheny juggernaut, losing by nine points. Those nine points most
clearly came from front-runner Stephanie Madia, who was second to Hempfield's
Lauren Bricker, 19:15, by, you guessed it, nine seconds.
In AA, Quaker Valley dominated both the boys and girls races, by wide margins.
Maxine Markfield won for the top team, while Zach Thomas and Adam Bernis went
2-3 to lead their win. October 25, 2001 -
District 2 @ Scranton Municipal Golf Course - In AA boys,
Scranton Prep showed up big at crunch time, led by Jonathan Pastore in 16:24.
Scranton Prep placed seven runners in the top 22. And so did North Pocono,
led by Larry Davies in 16:49. All five guys in the top 25. Scranton Prep girls placed
five in the top 21 behind Stephanie Rader's 21:04. But Stacey Muchal, Valley
View, won the AA individual title in 19:33. Tunkhannock was led by Ella Daniels
in 20:15, and placed five in the top 21 in AAA. October
25, 2001 - District 11 @ Lehigh University -
It was a windy Indian summer day at the deceivingly tough Lehigh University
course in Bethlehem. Paula Giguere ran 18:56.8 to repeat as District 11 AAA
girls champ, leading her somewhat short-handed defending state champion Parkland
squad back to the state meet by a mere point. Central Catholic used a 1:24
1-5 spread and took the girls title with 53 points, with Parkland 2nd with
65. But Easton and Liberty could only imagine what difference two places with
any of their runners could have meant, as they both finished with 66 points.
In AA girls, Notre Dame just nipped Nativity BVM by three, 52-55. Saucon Valley
tallied 57 points to get the final state berth. Christa Plummer of Palisades,
led from the mile and won going away in 19:33.9. The AAA boys race rapidly
developed into a two-man battle as Liberty's Dorian McDonald and Emmaus' Joel
Thomas quickly broke the field, including pre-race favorite Tim Erickson of
Southern Lehigh. McDonald finished as the only runner under 16 in 15:57.1,
with Thomas 20 seconds back, and Erickson another 8 seconds behind that. But
Thomas will be joined by his team, as they bettered the other automatic qualifier,
Stroudsburg, by 30, 56-86. in the AA boys race, Saucon Valley landed six guys
in the top 22 to take Notre Dame and Northern Lehigh, the other two team qualifiers,
62-76-120, respectively. October 20, 2001 - District
8 @ Schenley Oval, Pittsburgh - Allderice won everything
up for grabs at the District 8 Championships held in Pittsburgh's Shenley Oval,
including both varsity and both JV races. The boys, led by Ian Wolfson's 16:54,
tallied just 20 points. The girls matched that score behind Molly Ainsman and
her 19:50. Thursday, October 25, 2001 District
4 @ Bloomsburg University AA GIRLS - Charity Learn led
all with the only sub-20 at 19:44. She'll be joined by fellow Mansfield teammate,
and sister, Tricia, who was third, and the Northeast Bradford and Troy teams
at States.AAA GIRLS - Williamsport easily qualified with just 26 points, led
by Sammy Colvin's 21:04, and three in the top ten. AA BOYS - Chris Spooner
of Lewisburg, continued his strong season by capturing the district tite in
16:47. Danville and Northeast Bradford will be the two AA teams at States.
AAA BOYS - Shikellamy's Jadrien Deibler took top honors in 17:03, leading his
team to a 16 point win and a state berth over Williamsport. More
