Pennsylvania Cross Country 2001

September 8 Weekend

Ohio-transfer and new frosh star
Course records of Renee Gunning and Paige Miller bite the dust
Two fastest PA times so far

California University of PA Invitational
Dan Mazzocco, Baldwin, debuts with a 16:16 for a 12 second win over
Altoona JR Bob Boston. Defending AAA state champ Shawn Cavanaugh is 4th
in 17:07, but his Mount Lebanon team looks good, scoring just 83 points
to defeat Altoona by 46. Hempfield JR Lauren Bricker wins the meets for
the second year in a row over North Allegheny's Stephanie Madia
(19:08-19:37), but Madia's North Allegheny team looks good with a 26
point win over Greensburg Salem. Mt. Lebanon's Lauren Wood, a sophomore,
also runs a 19:37.

At the Gettysburg Invitational, Hershey's Angie Saterstad takes an easy
win, running an 18:48.4 to win by over a minute. The Cedar Cliff boys
and girls teams took both titles. The girls with 69 points, but the
boys, the favorite to win this year's state AAA title, with an
impressive 27 points (2-3-4-8-10-15-16), with a spread between one and
five of just 42 seconds, and the entire top seven within 1:08. Patrick
Philbin was the top Colt, getting second overall in 16:32, 15 seconds
behind defending District 3 champ Ryan Blood of East Pennsboro. Both
Blood and Philbin are juniors.

At the Bear Mountain Cross Country River Run at Lock Haven University,
Chris Spooner, Lewisburg, leads his team to victory and sets a new
course record with a 16:18. Brittany Dechert, a FR from Northern
Lebanon, also set a course record with her 20:28. Lewisburg took the
team title with 41 points.

KATIE STEPP, A FRESHMAN TRANSFER FROM OHIO, WON HER FIRST INVITATIONAL AS A HIGH SCHOOLER, BEATING SEVERAL RETURNING STATE MEDALISTS, AND TEAMMATE AND DEFENDING
DISTRICT 11 CHAMP PAULA GIGUERE.
That makes the road easier for the
defending state champions. But does it? They were defeated in this race
by Easton 73-79 which placed five runners in the top twenty. Stepp
outkicked Red Lion's Kate Papenberg to win by just three seconds with a
19:24 on the tough course. In the boys race, Council Rock showed early
season strength that everyone feared they had, beating a strong
Hatboro-Horsham team 49-97. Mike DiDio won the race in 16:17.

CB EAST INVITATIONAL @ CB EAST HS. THE TWO FASTEST 5K'S IN PA SO FAR.
RENEE GUNNING'S COURSE RECORD BROKEN: Council Rock's Jessie Cickay ran
the fastest 5K of the young season, and in the process, broke the
two-year old course record of Pennridge star Renee Gunning by 36
seconds, the new standard now 17:50. Her team also won, taking North
Penn by two points, 50 to 52. Also going sub-19 were Jessica Yester,
Downingtown, 18:38, and Bal Myers, CB East, 18:46. In the boys race,
host CB East took the team title with 77 points, with Upper Moreland
second with 98. Upper Moreland's Mark Mullelly ran the fastest boys 5K
in the state, a 15:31, to take individual honors.

Abington Invitational @ Abington HS - PAIGE MILLER'S COURSE RECORD
BROKEN BY FORMER TEAMMATE. In the girls race, Erin Franklin,
Wissahickon, breaks former teammate Paige Miller's Abington course
record, leading her team to their second invitational win in the first
two weeks of the season with 44 points, 27 ahead of second place
Governor Mifflin and 53 ahead of Haverford. Franklin's time of 18:34
was 19 seconds ahead of Coatesville's Kelly O'Connell. Coatesville's
boys defeated annual power Paul VI from NY, led by Rob Robertsons second
place 16:02 and Justin Robertson's 6th place 16:45. Perkionmen Valley's
Will Hollister, a 2000 state XC medallist, took top honors with a 15:57
on the 3.1 mile course, breaking Robertson's 2000 course record.

Cumberland Valley took both the boys and girls championships at the
Lebanon Valley Invitational at Memorial Lake State Park in Fort
Indiantown Gap. CV's 73 points was 18 ahead of AA power Scranton Prep.
St. Joseph's Prep and Woodbridge HS (VA) both had
109 points, with St. Joe's getting the call on 6th man. Woodbridge's
Mike Lyng took top honors in 16:36.89, followed closely by CV's Mark
Turner less than six seconds back. The Cumberland Valley girls posted
just 68 points and easily outdistanced Woodbridge
HS (VA) by placing five in the top 30. Western Wayne sophomore Meaghan
Robbins took first with a 20:05, 14 seconds better than West Allegheny's
Christine Taranto. Complete Lebanon Valley results including JV and college

Kutztown Invitational @ Kutztown University - Pottsgrove's Corey Rogers
picked up where he ended his last XC season, in front. He took Saturday's Kutztown
Invitational in 16:51 by five seconds over Conrad Weiser's Chris Muldoon.
Chambersburg took the boys title over a strong AA team from Wyomissing
by 31 points. Ephrata was third, and Strath Haven, fourth. In the girls' race,
Springfield Delco's Stefanie Thomas beat the Huss twins of Wyomissing
with her 19:27. Juniors Debbie and Amy were second and third, two and six seconds
back, respectively. Last year's District 3 champion and state medalist, soph
Kylee Schuler of Chambersburg, was fourth in 19:47. Chambersburg girls took
the team title by just two points over Wyomissing. Cardinal O'Hara, led by Katie
Irwin's fifth place finish in 19:54, placed third, 20 points behind Wyomissing.

Mill Street Run, Bristol, PA 2.9 miles: Pennsbury boys Neshaminy girls
took their respective Division I (large schools) titles, while the
Division 2 (small schools) was won by Holy Ghost boys and Villa Joseph Marie girls. The fastest boys time of the day was turned in in the Divisioin 2 race, as Sean Doyle,
Lansdale Catholic, ran 15:29, four seconds ahead of Holy Ghost's Bill
Ference. Buddy Davis, Council Rock, took the DI race in 16:02. Julie
Malloy, Neshaminy, won the girls race in 18:39, five seconds up on
Pennsbury's Casey Carey. Annie Devinney, Lower Moreland, won the D2 race
in 19:08.

Twin Valley Relays (4 x two miles) in Morgantown - Cardinal O'Hara
defeats defending champ Solanco, setting a course record, despite wrong
turns by two of its relay members. Steve Hallinan-10:37 (2nd fastest
split in course history), TJ Coll-11:15, Joe Francisco-10:37.5 (fastest
split in course history), Vince Gravelle- 11:16.

Boys

The men of Pennsylvania have already started to clock some phenomenal times as the Cross Country season gets underway. Girls

Pennsylvania women turned in an outstanding weekend. Katie Stepp, a freshman transfer from Ohio, won her first invitational as a high schooler, beating several medallists to win in 19:24.
