WAPPINGER FALLS NY 11/17/01 -- The 28th running
of the New York Federation cross country championships at Bowdoin
State Park featured a team sweep by Saratoga, two dominating individuals,
and a general assault on the record book.
Victory by Saratoga's girls, ranked #1 in the US
by The Harrier magazine,
was a foregone conclusion, ratified in the actuality with a 36 point
score and 123-point margin. The boys, however, had to sweat out
the scoring to the 73rd runner (40th scorer) before celebrating
a 119-136 victory over Shenendehowa.
There were 500 runners in this 1-day union of the
balkanized New York prep scene (upstate public schools, independents,
New York City public schools, and the Catholics), one race for girls
and one for boys.
The girls race was settled seconds after the start
when Notre Dame Elmira sr Molly Huddle broke from the pack in the
opening plain along the Hudson River. Huddle never relinquished
control and just missed becoming the second girl ever to break 18
minutes at Bowdoin. Her time of 18:02.52 was just 6 seconds off
the course record of Erin Davis, Saratoga, 17:56.6 in 1993. A 3-girl
pack behind Huddle had a see-saw struggle throughout, ending with
Homer sr Tracey Bauksieck 2nd (18:11.37), Fayetteville-Manlius sr
Laurel Burdick 3rd (18:12.90), and Saratoga 8th grader Nicole Blood
4th (18:17.68). These three claimed positions 3-5-6 on the all time
Bowdoin list. Next was Holy Names jr Elizabeth Maloy 18:33.24 (10th
all time Bowdoin).
The boys race had the same margin at the end but
took a more circuitous path to get there. Sayville jr Brian Dalpiaz,
winner of the NYPSHSAA Class B title a week ago, won in 15:45.37,
10 seconds ahead of Canton sr Jon Pierce 15:55.28, Pearl River jr
Brendan Fennell 15:56.31, and Port Jefferson sr Brendan Sullivan
16:02.02. Dalpiaz made a surge in the second mile on the hills that
no one matched and was able to cruise home without serious exertion.
The top four runners moved into positions 2-5-7-10 on the Bowdoin
all time list. Dalpiaz was 6 seconds off the course record (Charles
Millioen, St. Anthony's 15:39.7, 2000). Dalpiaz will have to wait
until next Saturday ( Foot Locker Northeast regional championship
at Van Cortlandt Park, New York City) to meet NYPSHSAA Class A champion
Peter Meindl. The Orchard Park senior bypassed the Federation meet
to save himself for Foot Locker.
