Ed Grant's Reports

January 26 - Groups 1 and 4

Netters:

Top mark at the second half of the New Jersey HS group
championships yesterday was a 63-8 3/4 in the Gr. IV SP for Glenn DiGiorgio
of Bayonne.

On the track, the highlight was the Gr. IV 800M where the first
three boys beat 1:58 running without spikes on the hard-tack Princeton
rubber track. Shannon Sherrer of Vineland won in 1:57.21, thanks to a quick
move as the last lap got under way which opened a 15-yard gap on the field.
He teamed with his older brother Schafer, the 400 winner, to bring his
school its first state group title ever, indoors or out.

Trenton's powerful girls' team repeated in Gr. IV though a couple of
sedding glitches probably cost it points. For example, its
Millrose-qualifying 1600R team wound up in the otherwise slowest heat and
finished only third overall.

A new star was unveiled in Hillsboro junior Erin Crawford, who upset
Shabazz Kelly of Trenton in the 800, was 2nd to defender Tawana Watkins of
Paterson Kennedy (who ran 56.79) in the 400 and ran a very strong anchor
which got her team 4th in the 1600R.

January 20 - Groups 2 and 3

Netters:

In the rest of the country, at least where indoor track is a real
sport, the season is hardly beginning, but, in New Jersey. we are deep into
the state champiosnhosp, with two group meets having been held this past
weekend and two more coming up this Saturday.

The Group II and III meets last Saturday had some exciting team
action with the issue in doubt in everyone of the four groups until the
closing 1600-meter relay. As it turned out, the list of winners was the same
as in the recent state relays, Willingboro sweeping the Gr. III title,
Bridgeton taking Gr. II boys and Hopewell Valley Gr. II girls.

Despite the lack of spikes (and starting blocks for the sprints) on
the hard rubber surface at Princeton's Jadwin Gym, plus the absence of some
key runners, there were some pretty fair times.

Among the missing were Camden's Jade Smith, reportedly under
suspension at school, and Scotch Plains' Ray Williams, who were to face off
in the Gr. III 400. Williams, who placed 3rd in the National outdoor 400
last spring, had a sore leg and went to his family doctor, who recommended a
week'd rest. This automatically pout him out of action and he will now miss
the all-group meet as well, as will Smith.

This leaves the 400 open to junior Lance Wigfall of Clifford Scott.
who ran a solo 49.89. Unfortunately, his chief rival, Marlin Gross of
Bridgeton, wound up in an unseeded section because no time had been
submitted for him. He also ran solo and clocked 50.76.

One of the three New Jersey boys invited to the Millrose Mile was in
action, John Richardson of Ocean City, who had earned his spot the day
before with a sub-4:20 2nd at the New Balance Games. He won the Gr. III 1600
in a tactical duel with soph Jeremy Zagorski of Parsippany Hills (the two
had finished 2-3 in the outdoor AG race last spring. The other two Millrose
entries, Marc Pelerin of Cherokee and Chris Platt of Haddonfield, will be
active this weekend, but in separate races.

The boys; 800 is shaping up as one of the major face-offs at the AG
meet., Last Sunday, Jeff Zodda of Notre Dame won the Gr. III race in 1:58.31
and Robert Edwards of Brigdeton took the Gr. II event in a close duel with
Joe Forrest of Pleasantville in 1:58.85. TYhe Gr. IV race this Saturday will
have four boys who have already broken 2::00 this winter, plus Jeff Peterson
of Christian Brothers, who has one of the nation's top times in the 1K.

The star of the girls meet was Shameka Speed of Bridgeton, who came
very close to winning the Gr. II title almost by herself. She tripled the
55M, 55H and 400 and was second in the HJ, a new event for her (her nromal
fierld event is the LJ which is not on the NJ indoor program). But the
Bulldogs lost by one point when Hopewell Valley p;laced 2nd in the 1600R.

The Trotter twins could not quite bring off the Gr. III title for
Red Bank. Katie repeated in the 800 with teammate Katie Kingsbery 3rd, while
Amanda repeated her 2001 double in the 1600 and 3200 with impressive times
of 5:05.71 and 10:53.89 (Katie was 2nd in the 1600 5:08.00). Both girls
should be Millrose candidates next year after running their first CC season.
(They have played soccer the past three falls).

Amanda's 1600 was not the best NJ eight-lap race of the weekend
however. In an astonishing improvement, soph Casey Nelson of Hunterdon
Central took some 15 seconds off her PR as she placed 2nd in the New Balance
mile in 5:01.68. Casey is in her first indoor season (ahe is also a soccer
player); she had run 5:16 or so last Wednesday night at the Drew University
meet. She was some 25 yards ahead of Caitlin Smyth of Immaculate heart
Academy in ther Armory race; Caitlin had been the state leader until this
past weekend. (By the way, the trotters were by no means fresh for Sunday's
action, they had both tripled on Friday night in leacing Red Bank to the
Monmouth County title)

Michael Morrison of Willingboro, who has topped 7-0 or better thrtee
times this winter, cleared only 6-8, but had a reasonable excuse, as he had
to run a 400 in the middle of the HJ competition.

The Fazekas sisters of Demarest went 1-2 in the Gr. III shot pout at
45-11 and 43-11 1/2, with junior Kelly taking the lead this time over senior
Jessica, whose best this year is 45-9 1/2. This could be some kind of record
for sisters competing in the same year; it certainly is in NJ, which now has
three girls past 45-0 this winter, the third being Nicola Wilson of Trenton,
who had a 44-0 in leading her team to a record win in the relay event at the
New Balance meet.
