New Jersey Top 10 Poll

1. Old Bridge
1. Haddonfield Memorial
3. Hunterdon Central
4. Don Bosco
5. Mainland
5. Cherokee
5. Toms River North
8. Paul VI
9. Red Bank
10.CBA

Honorable Mention - Holmdel, Memorial, Shawnee, Ocean
City, Middletown South, Hillsborough, Cranford, Scotch
Plains.

What a week! A known powershouse crumbles;
Controversy regarding who the #1 team in the state
should be (a tie?); Lots of moves in the top 10. Lets
get on with the poll!

Old Bridge - I am not going to lie...this week I
almost demoted Old Bridge to the #2 position in the
state. But it only took a quick glance at their
conference meet results (which I did not see until
today) to sway my opinon. More on why I was going to
demote them in the next piece on Haddonfield. Anyway,
Old Bridge just blew away the competition. They
packed their top five runners in the top seven and
averaged 16:18 as they scored 22 points, which is
believed to be the lowest score ever at the Greater
Middlesex Conference Cross-Country Championships. I
am impressed.

Haddonfield - How I wanted to make these guys the solo
#1 team in the state. But for now they will have to
settle with a tie. However, my fellow South Jersey
boys ran exceptionally well at the Eastern States meet
held at Van Cortland Park. They avg. around 13:20 as
a team for the 2.5 mile course, just a tick faster
than Old Bridge. In fact...if you take the times that
Old Bridge ran at the Manhattan Invite and score them
against Haddonfield's performance at the Eastern
States, Haddonfield wins. I got a rough score of
52-66. For those who are interestd: Platt - 12:38,
Stiles - 12:40, Bonette - 12:56. The best top three
in the state just continue to roll.

Mainland - They had a fun time this weekend
demolishing the competition at the Atlantic County
Championships. The front three of Gertzen, Hughes and
Popsen finished 2,3,4 behind Tony Davenport of
Pleasantville. Their 4th man, McGroaty, was not far
off pace as he finished 6th behind John Leeds.
Although they are tied right now with Cherokee and
TRN, ultimatly I think they will hurt from a lack of a
5th man.

Cherokee - Ran to win at the Burlington County Open.
Pelerin and Krieger ran as they were expected, taking
the top two spots. Mueller improved on his
performance finishing 5th overall. But without Sean
Mchaughlin, who was out with a minor injury, Cherokee
had to rely on the unreliable Ridenour and Freeman. I
think there coach sums it up best in this statement
made to the Courier Post, "We probably could have run
better if we weren't missing Sean, but it was a step
in the right direction. We ran better than we have
been. The team is still going to have to bring it up
one more notch if we're going to beat Toms River North
at the sectionals (Nov.27 at Williamstown)."

Toms River North - I did not see any results for them
this past weekend but they are beginning to form a
tough, tight team. You know that if Cherokee coach
Steven Shaklee is concerned about you that things are
going right. Go TRN!

Red Bank - I bet they had a huge party after the
Monmouth County Championships. I can not say any more
than that. I was shocked when I saw they had beaten
CBA. Congrats! Hopefully they can carry this
momentum to the State Meet.

CBA - they lost the Monmouth County meet. I also
heard they lost an assistant coach. This is a season
that I think CBA can not wait to have end. They might
be able to salvage a PAR A title at the State
Championships but after this blow from Red Bank I
don't know if their hearts will be set on it.
