New Jersey Cross Country 2001

Boys Rankings 10/15

by Conrad Haber

New Jersey Top 10

1. Old Bridge
2. Haddonfield
3. Hunterdon Central
4. Don Bosco
5. Cherokee
6. Mainland
6. CBA
8. Toms River North
9. Paul VI
10.Red Bank

Honorable Mention - Holmdel, Memorial, Shawnee, Ocean
City, Middletown South, Hillsborough, Cranford.

Note: Ocean City ran at the 6th Annual Walt Disney
World Classic and did exceptional. Out of the 63
teams that competed, Ocean City recorded the 4th
fastest team time of the day led by #1 runner Jon
Richardson who covered the course in 15:30.

Now on to the poll.

The Poll does not change much this week. Granted, for
those who are wondering, I am aware that the Harrier
has Old Bridge ranked #2 and Haddonfield #1 in the
state. Right now I am just not convinced that
Haddonfield could beat Old Bridge. It would be close
but ultimatly Old Bridge would come out on top.
Perhaps Mr. Bloom knows something I don't but I doubt
it.

At the Manhattan Invite. Old Bridge got down to
business. They easily won their divison and in the
process beat out #21 Bishop Hendrickson of RI for the
fastest team avg of the day. Old Bridge had an avg.
of 13:23 for the 2.5 mile race. Impressive.

Haddonfield had an equally impressive weekend. The
Bulldogs won the South Jersey Open (Divison I) with a
perfect score of 15. Platt paved the road for success
with a 15:55 peformance. Not far behind was Stiles in
15:58. The rest of the team ran well as they all
broke 17 with Bonnette finishing in 16:07, Vitez in
16:45 and Goldberg in 16:53. I would have really
liked to have seen Goldberg run quicker but I guess I
am just being picky. Afterall, they did win with a
perfect score.

What can I say about Hunterdon Central...they just
keep getting better and better. They won their
divison at the Manhattan Invite and posted some
impressive times. Fox and Pannone led the way running
13:15 and 13:27 respectively. I would not be
surprised to see them in the mix at MOC.

Cherokee continues its exhausting season. Once again
Pelerin and Krieger ran exceptional but received
little support. Pelerin blazed through the course
running 12:48 with Krieger not far behind in 13:07.
Sean McLaughlin ran well but Cherokee can't count on a
freshman to make things happen. The veterans on the
team need to step it up if Cherokee wants to win
another State Group IV title.

Mainland was the team that impressed me the most this
past weekend. They won their Divison at the South
Jersey Open over a very tough Paul VI squad. I think
the times for the team speak for themselves. Hughes
16:18, Gertzen 16:32, McGroarty 16:43, Popeson 16:47
and Palmentieri 17:11. Enough said.

CBA ran a lot better at the Manhattan Invitational
then they did last weekend at the Shore Coaches
Invitational but they still have a long way to go. I
dunno what is going on over there at CBA but hopefully
coach Heath can get a fix on it. I am sure he will.
Come the state meet we should see a more focused CBA
squad.

Paul VI ran well at the SJ Open finishing second to a
very impressive Mainland squad. Leading the way for
Paul VI was Andrew Vernon who covered the course in
16:14. The only drawback for Paul VI was that they
did not run as a pack like they normally do. There
was almost a 1 min gap between their #1 and #5 runner
-a gap too big if they want to stay competitive with
the bigger teams.
