Powerhouse programs from Missouri and Kansas clashed in the Husky Relays
in suburban Kansas City. Kansas City (MO) Ruskin won the girls title with 92
points over Kansas schools Olathe East (78.5) and Lawrence (72). Six time
defending Kansas 6A champ Leavenworth placed fourth with 66 points. Lee's
Summit (MO) powered to the boys title with 140 points, well ahead of Lawrence
(108.5) and Kansas City (MO) Rockhurst (61).

Lee's Summit's title was spearheaded by a 1-2-3 finish in the triple jump,
and and a first place finish in the long jump from G Calloway (21-11.5, and
first in the triple at 45-0.5). Lawrence's C Fulton also doubled in the
sprints with 10.64/ 22.21 victories. Blue Spring's Tony Camareno starred in
the distances with a 9:47.55 3200 win after placing second to team-mate Evan
Lipari in the 1600 (4:26.38 and 4;27.38).
The sprints shone on the girls side with Kansas City (MO) Park Hill
South's K Cook winning a 11.66 100 over Olathe East's Sarah Clay (11.87) and
doubling back in the 200 at 25.82. Leavenworth's Amy Hastings, the defending
Kansas 6A cross country champ, won the 1600 (5;17.62) and 3200 (11:20.37)
handily. Ruskin's team win was keyed by L. Murrilo who led a Ruskin 1-2-3
sweep in the 100 H's at 15.99, then won the 300 H in 48.59. Clay anchored
Olathe East to 50.24 4 x 100 win and ran a low 57 split as Leavenworth edged
East 4:16.46 to 4:18.44 in the 4 x 400. L. Rimmer of Ruskin leaped 17-7 in
the LJ and won a 38-6 TJ. Topeka High's Crystal Kemp came off an All-State
basketball season to win the DT at 121-9.
