Emporia State Relays 4/5/02 @ Emporia, KS
A perfect afternoon for track gave way to a quickly cooling evening at Emporia State Friday evening, as the Emporia State Relays enjoyed it's best weather in memory. The meet provides a unique opportunity for small Kansas schools to compete against larger programs, although the two divisions are scored seperatly.
Olathe East won the large schools girls title, with two meet record performances. the Hawks won the 4 x 100 by over a second in 50.34, breaking the old meet record by almost a second, and the 4 x 800 in 10:09.3, breaking the old meet record by three seconds. The 4 x 800 saw East anchor Allison Bessler ( a recent West Point signee) hold off Shawnee Height's Trish Nickoley, the defending 5A state 400/800/cross country champion. East also had the high jump champion (Christan Boeckel 5-0). Olathe North's Stephanie Dyke scored a triple win in the 100H (15.80), 300H (a meet record 48.64) and LJ (17-3.75).
Northern Heights outscored Olpe 106-84 for the small schools girls title. NH was led by a 1-2 finish in the JT from Jorrie Young (134-6 meet record) and Connie Phillips (126-8). Olpe, a class 1A power, stunned the Distance Medley field with a meet record (13:05.0), outdistancing a Nickoley anchored Shawnee Heights (13:20). Nickoley also ran on meet record setting 4 x 200 (1:48.72) and 4 x 400 (4:11.5) relays.
The large schools boys title went to Raytown South (MO) 85, in hot contest with Olathe North 83, Olathe East 82, and Topeka Washburn Rural 79.
