Great Bend Invitational Tuesday 4/9/02 @ GBHS
Liberal swept the team titles, winning 156 to Great Bend's 74 in the girls and 147.5 to Great Bend's 110 in the boys. Morgan Bonds (Hutchinson) previewed her big KT Woodman wins with a 36-8.5 TJ/ 25.56 200 double. The 200 victory came over state leader Lindsay Gallegos of Liberal (25.99).

Salina South Relays Monday 4/8/02 @ Salina District Stadium
Manhattan romped to the girls title, winning 12 of the meet's 17 events. State hurdle leader Julie Curtis contributed legs on the winning 4 x 400 (4:10.1) and 300H relay (1:50.5 combined times for three runners).

Manhattan Invitational Friday 4/12/02 @Bishop Stadium, Manhattan
Lawrence's boys and Manhattan's girls won the team titles. Lawrence was led by Dylan McClain's distance wins(4:28.5/ 9:47.41)and sprinter Chris Fulton (10.72). Manhattan's Matt Schwandt threw the javelin 186-5.
Manhattan's girls were led by Julie Curtis's triple wins in the 100H (14.31), 300H (45.96) and 200 (25.50)

Leavenworth Invitational Saturday 4/13/02
Six time defending 6A state champ Leavenworth avenged a loss last week to Bishop Miege, winning 149-95, with Emporia third at 89 points. Shawnee Mission East won the boys title 159 to 93 for Blue Valley North.
April Heath returned from injury to lead a Leavenworth 1-2 in the 400, winning in 59.13, and also won the 100 in 12.78 in addition to anchoring the winning 4 x 400. Team mate Amy Hastings won a tough 1600 (5:13.74) from SM East's Kelly Malarkey (5:17.14), and then easily won the 3200 in 11:36.22.
Top mark on the boys side was a 15-0 PV win for Blue Valley North's Sam Allred.

5A-6A on Thursday 4/11/02, 4A-1A on Friday 4/12/02

The 6A-5A boys 800, both 200's and 4 x 400's were cancelled due to tornado warnings.

5A-6A report:  Girls-Hutchinson's Morgan Bonds was the star of the show, with victories in the 400, 800 and Triple Jump. Bonds scored an impressive 400 victory in 57.17, over 5A state champ Trisa Nickoley (Topeka Shawnee Heights) at 59.19.
Bonds then won a close 800 in 2:19.36, edging Maize's Liz Kramer (2:19.54) and Nickeley (2:19.58).  Bonds won the triple jump by over two feet at 36-6.5.  
 Nickoley and Kramer hooked up in an exciting 1600, with Nickoley winning in 5:17.74 (Kramer 5:17.79).  McPherson's Jenna Balsick won both hurdle races (15.21/47.35)and team mate Rachel Stephens the HJ (5-0). Chelsea Baldwin (Ponca City OK) dominated the 3200, winning by over 40 seconds at 11:16.18.  Yoland Goff won the 100 at 12.07, then anchored her Tulsa (OK) Washington team to a 49.07 400 relay win.  Tiffani Johnson added another Washington win in the LJ (16-11.25).  Jessie Irving (Andale) pole vaulted 10-0 and KSU basketball signee Jessica McFarland (Derby) won the shot at 41-9, and placed second to Maize's Heather Harris (130-10) in the disc (McFarland 129-7).  Ronnie McLaughlin (Haysville Campus) won the JT by over 30 feet at 141-1.  Blue Valley Northwest won the 4 x 800 won in 10:12.35.

 5A-6A Boys:  Wichita South's Brian Baker highlighted the boys portion of the meeting, winning the shot by over 10 feet with a throw of 60-11.75, and taking  the disc by almost 15 feet at 163-10.  Kyle Becker (Derby) won the JT at 175-6.
    Steve Elliot (listed as unattached) won the PV at 15-0, winning on misses from Mike Mehring (Blue Valley Northwest).  Mehring's team mate Chris Lockard was third at 14-6.  Blue Valley Northwest also had double sprint winner Mark Anderson (10.95/ 51.20).  
  Matt Swedlund (Topeka Washburn Rural) won a close 1600 over Stillwater's (OK) Andrew Tower (4:31.30 to 4:32.43). Tower came back to win the 3200 (9:51.88) over 6A cross country champ Ryan Wilson (Wichita Heights-9:55.91).  Kyle Roberts (Hutchinson) won the 110H (15.05) and placed second in the 300H (41.45 to McPherson's Lantz Tolson (41.25).  Relay titles went to Wichita South (44.12 4 x 1), and Edmond (OK) Memorial (8:14.55 4 x 8).  Bryce Miller (Maize) won the HJ (6-4) on misses from Westmoore's (OK) Zac Bridwell.  Horizontal jump titles went to Zweygardt Cale (Maize-21-10) and Marcus Miller (Topeka Shawnee Heights-43-11.75).  

4A-1A Girls:  Pratt's Asley Melichar swept the sprints (12.83/ 26.61/ 60.16) and Goodland's Rachael Hagerman dominated the hurdle fields with 1+ second wins (15.34/ 48.57).  Melichar edged Hargerman by .26 in the 200.  Freshman Mallory Champa (Clearwater) dominated a good 1600 field in 5:19.66.  Mica Land (Andover) won the 800 (2:25.62 over Clay Center's Kristi Perry 2:26.59) after placing second in the 1600.  Southwestern Height's Krista Barnett won the 3200 in 11:51.25.  Goodland's Lacey Brenner won the HJ (5-5) and Cheney's Jennifer Goldsmith won the JT by over 10 feet at 131-8.  Andover edged Pratt 66-61 for the team title.

4A-3A Boys:  Baldwin won the boys title, keyed by distance wins from Matt Noonan.  Noonan won the 1600 4:27.79 over Concordia's Ryan Kirkpatrick's 4:30.7 and ran 9:37.12 to edge Clay Center's Joe Moore (9:37.32) in the 3200.  Erick Black contributed runnerup finishes in the 110H (15.65 behind Scott Lervold of Concordia's 15.37) and 400 (50.88 behind Towanda-Circle's Justin Chandler at 49.58).  Baldwin's Hugh Murphy and Eric Brown went 1-2 in the Javelin (198-7 and 189-10 respectivly.)  Wellington's Tim Lira won the 100 (11.14) and 200 (22.75), while Concordia's Jason Cash scored a unique vertical jump double (6-6, 13-6).  Clay Center's Derek Corral dominated the LJ, with six jumps over 22 feet (22-8.5) and won the TJ at 42-4.5.

2A-1A Girls:  Garden Plain won the girls title, with the outstanding marks coming from Rachel Talbert.  Talbert, who is home-schooled in Wichita, won the DT at 138-1, and JT at 117-4, tossing in a 34-8.25 SP third.  Soloman's Heather Nelson won a middle distance double (2:29.59/ 5:39.36) while Hutch Trinity's Jerica Hoffman won a 12.93/ 27.21 sprint double.  South Central's Whitney Shuck won a 5-4 HJ over defending 2A champ Joanie Nelson (Soloman-5-2)

2A-1A Boys:  Garden Plain completed a sweep of the team titles.  Trenton Staab (Plainville) won the SP (52-3) and DT (151-5), while Kansas City Christian's Philip Brandon (9:57.81) and Sedwick's Cory Enterkin (4:32.75) won the distances.
