Weekend Roundup 9/29

Amy Hastings stays undefeated. Blue Valley West girls nip Blue Valley Northwest by 1 point. Great Bend boys beat Liberal in western KS 5A battle.

Thursday 9/27/01

Hays Invitational @ Ft. Hays State University (2.1 miles for girls)
Great Bend and Liberal continued their western Kansas rivalry for 5A dominance at the Hays Invitational with Great Bend winnng the boys title 30-42. Hays finished third with 79 points. Liberal's Justin Alexander won the individual title overall with a time of 16:35, over Great Bend's Tanner Marshall (17:10) and team mate Brent Groves (17:13). Ulysses won the 4A-1A division with 30 points, followed by Colby (61) and Hays' TMP-Marian High at 78. All division's ran together but were scored separatly
Wakeeney's Erin Locke held just off the pace set by Ulysses's Andrea Meierhoff until the final straight, and then sprinted in to win in 13:19 for 2.1 miles. Meierhoff finished second at 13:27. Great Bend won the girls 5A-6A title with 28 points, followed by Dodge City (73) and Liberal (74). Wakeeney won the 4A-1A title with 42 points, followed by Smith Center (62) and Ulysses (72).

Winfield Invitational
Andover's girls continue to look like 4A title contenders, placing three runners in the top 5 to win the Winfield Viking Run. Mica Land (12:11) and Sam Cheatham (12:15) ran 1-2 for Andover, followed by Amber Shanahan of Wichita North (12:20). Andover won the the team title with 29 points. Wichita North (64) and Winfield (74) followed.
Ryan Ghaffari of Rose Hill won the boys title in 16:56, edging Ark City's Daniel Didion (16:58), with Derby's Matt Moon third at 17:05. Moon led Derby to the boy's team title with 47 points. Rose Hill (93) and Wichita North 101 followed.

Halstead Invitational
Mallory Champa (Clearwater) continues to crush competition in south-central Kansas, winning by over a minute in 11:40 for two miles at Halstead. Lea Cox of Halstead was second in 12:43 and led Halstead to a narrow 32-36 win over Clearwater.
Daniel Simon (Andale) romped to victory in 16:26, winning by thirty seconds of Cory Enterkin (Sedgwick-16:57). Clearwater gapped Andover Central to win by 20 points.

Horton Invitational: Sabetha swept both the boys and girls team titles. Kentzler (Atchison Mt. St. Scholastica continued her climb as a 4A state condtender, winning by over 40 seconds in 12:30 after a sub 12:00 race on Tuesday. Eric Wellman (Horton) edged Andy Fenton (Jackson Heights) by one second to win in 17:37.

Topeka Hayden Invitiatonal @ State Hospital Grounds, Topeka
Baldwin's Matt Noonan continued his undefeated season, defeating 6A state contender Matt Swedlund of Washburn Rural among others. Noonan took command early on the rolling 5K course, winning in 16:03 to Swedlund's 16:18. Jordan LaClore (Topeka Hayden-16;27), Joe Zimmer (Topeka Washburn Rural-16:41) and Tyler McClellan (Topeka Seaman-16;43) rounded out the top five. In the boys team race, Washburn Rural edged 3 time defending 4A champion Baldwin 36-50, with Topeka Seaman 83, Wamego 88, and Topeka Hayden 139, Junction City 143, and Royal Valley 165 following.
Erica Ogle gave Baldwin a sweep of the individual titles, winning in 12:23 over Royal Valley's Ashley Champman at 12:43. Jessica Barrand (Topeka Seaman-12:49), Jeanine LaCore (Topeka Hayden-12:58) and Pringle (Baldwin-12:59) finished out th top five.
Baldwin won a close team battle with 59 points, edging Topeka Hayden (63) and Topeka Seaman (65). Wamego 79, Royal Valley 102, and Washburn Rural 121 rounded out the other leading teams.

Pittsburg Invitational @ Four Oaks GC, Pittsburg KS
Girard's Stephanie Rohmer surprised the field with an unbeatable late surge to win the Pittsburg Invitational. Rohmer scored a one second win over Joplin's (MO) Kelly O' Toole in 12:37 to win her third invitational of the season. Paola edged Pittsburg 71-84 for the team win with Labette County third at 127.
Joplin's Andrew Beard won the boys title (no time reported), with Peter Sercer (Ft. Scott) second in 16;57 and Pittsburg's Jeremy Hurford third at 17:32. Pittsburg won the boys title with 87 points over Neosho (MO) with 111 and Caney Valley third with 119.

Buhler Invitational
Hutchinson's Tyler Roark roared to a one minute plus victory, winning the Buhler Invite in 16:24 over Chris Schoeder (Buhler-17:27). Schroeder led three Buhler runners in the top six, as Buhler won 36-64 over Hutchison with McPherson third at 89.
El Dorado, one of the girls 4A favorites, won their team race 41-56 over Buhler, with Hutchinson at 65. Morgan Bonds (Hutchinson), last year's 6A runner-up, ran to an easy victory in 12:13. Valley Center's Selecia Nold was second at 12:43, with Katie Stockstill (McPherson) third at 12:46

Emporia State Invitational @ Jones Park, Emporia
Lawrence's Justin Riley rolled to a fast 16:00 5k win over team mate Dylan McClain (16:11) to lead Lawrence to victory in the inaugural Emporia State High School Invitational. Lawerence ran 1-2-3 to defeat Emporia 23-53, with fellow 2000 state qualifiers St. Thomas Aquinas third with 59. Blue Valley North (104) and Topeka West (128) followed.
Susan Butler gave Lawrence a sweep of individual titles, winning the girl's race in 12:05 over Emporia's Dana Seible (12:22). St. Thomas Aquinas packed well enough to win with 36 points over Emporia's 61. Lawrence (87), Northern Heights (94), Blue Valley North (99) and Topeka West ( 131) followed.

Saturday 9/29/01

Shawnee Heights Invitational @ Tecumseh
Leavenworth's Amy Hastings continued her undefeated campaign with a convincing 11:53 win over Trish Nickoley, Shawnee Height's defending 5A state champ (12:04) and fellow All-Staters Harper McConnell (Manhattan 12:10), Elle Pishney (Blue Valley West 12:19), and Conne Abbott (SM South 12:26). Blue Valley West, which just opened this year, scored a major victory over rival Blue Valley Northwest, winning by a singal digit, 70-71, with Lawrence Free State third at 82.
Lawrence Free State placed five runners in the top fifteen to romp to the boy's title with 34 points. Topeka High (94) and Blue Valley West (108) placed second and third. Leavenworth's Dallas Henry ran to a 16:49 5k victory.

Bishop Miege Invitational @ Miege HS, Roeland Park
Missouri 2A state champ Allison Smith (Kansas City Pembroke Hill) rolled to her second Miege title, wining in 12:02 from Miege's Sarah Glatt (12:11) . Miege won the team title with 34 points, with Olathe East placing four runners in the top 15 for second with 66. Lansing was third with 116.
Mill Valley's Griffin Lee won the boy's title in 16:48 over Pembroke Hill's Eddie Higgins (17:02). Olathe East's James Swartz was third in 17:11. Kansas City (MO) Park Hill South placed all seven runners in the top 20 to score 38 points, winning over Olathe East (72) and Pembroke Hill (99)
