Kansas City Metro Championships @ Smithville Lake, Smithville MO 9/22/01

Blue Springs (MO) edged Lee's Summit (MO)in a close battle in the boys varsity race at the KC Metro championhsips, held over rolling ground at Smithville Lake. Blue Springs placed four runners in top 11 team scorers (1-6-10-11), then placed their fifth man 33rd
to edge Lee's Summit ( 2-8-15-17-21) by a score of 61 to 63. Lawrence High (KS) placed third at 104, with Lee's Summit North (MO) 122, and Independence Truman (MO) 154 following.
Platte County's (MO) Eli Klimek surprised the larger school runner's with a 16;28 victory, with Blue Spring's Tony Camereno following (16:35). Peter Browne (Lee's Summit-16:38), Brandon Daniels (Lee's Summit North-16;41), and Griffin Lee (DeSoto-Mill Valley KS-16:43) rounded out the top five.
Lee's Summit's girls placed all seven runners in the top 25 team scorers to win a 65 to 119 win over Suburban League rival Blue Springs. Independence Truman (145), Raytown MO (160) and Blue Springs South (MO)(168) followed.
Elle Pishney, of newly opened Blue Valley West (KS) won the individual title with a 19:38 over the 5k course. Alicia McGregor (Truman-19:43), Courtney Cockerell (Raytown-19:46), Sarah Glatt (Bishop Miege-KS-
19:47) and Kaly Prather (Raymore-Peculiar-MO-19:49) rounded out the top five.

Topeka Seaman Invitational @ SNAC, Topeka KS 9/22/01
David Williams (Wichita West) edged fellow 6A state contender Matt Swedlund (Topeka Washburn Rural) in the last 40 yards of a muddy Topeka Seaman Invitational. Willaims, who according to the Wichita Eagle newspaper ran in the mid-25's as a freshman for 5k paced most of the race with Swedlund, before Swedlud made a move with about 150 yards to go. Williams won in 16:33.8 to Swedlund's 16:34.2 In a close race of state ranked teams, Washburn Rural (64) continued their undefeated edging Wichita West (66) and Emporia (67).

Leavenworth's Amy Hastings continued her winning ways with the same tactics as usual (blasting to the front and leaving everyone behind), scoring an 11:46.6 win over Mission Valley's Blair Spencer (12:27.2). Emporia placed three runners in the top 10 to win with 57 points over Topeka Seaman (65) and Olathe East (98).

Royal Valley Invitational @ Hoyt 9/19/01
Defending state champs Erin Mortimer (Riley County-3A) and Trish Nickoley (Shawnee Heights-5A) hooked up in an exciting meet. Mortimer pulled away to an 11:53 to 12:21 win, but Nickoley led Shawnee Heights to the team title 40-77 over Sabetha. In the boys race 4A contenders Justin LaCore (Topeka Hayden 16:37) and Wamego's Todd Spreer (16:57) went 1-2, with Wamego (53) edging Riley County (69) in a battle of top 4A-3A teams.

Junction City Invitational 9/20/01
A rugged, hilly course slowed times, but the competition was still intense at Junction City. Hays High placed 1-2-3 to lead the boys field, winning 31-44 over Manhattan with Salina Central third at 88. Scott Rome (Hays) won the race in 17:28, with team mates Nick Squier (17:38) and Mike Staab (17:43) in second and third.
Manhattan's girls were led by a one-two finish from Harper McConnell (12:36) and Sam Wickham (12:55) with Hay's Pam Weber in third (13:15). Manhattan won the girls team title with 28 points, with Hays (70) and Junction City (76) in second and third.

Arkansas City Invitational 9/20/01
Wichita Bishop Carroll won both the boys and girls team titles at the Ark City Invite. Carroll scored 38 to win the boys title with Derby (57) and Wichita East (98)in second and third in a meet featuring teams from southern Kansas and Oklahoma. Wichita Height's Ryan Wilson won the individual title in 16:34 (5k), with Lance Reichenberger (Carroll-16:58), Brett Turowski (Bartlesville OK-17;11), Daniel Didion (Ark City-17:32) and Tyson Fairley (Derby-17;31) rounding out the top five.
Carroll edged city rival Kaupan-Mt. Carmel 78-84 for the girls team title with Wichita North third at 129. Ponca City OK's Chelsie Baldwin won the individual title at 11:55 for 2 miles. Amy Zeller (Carroll-12:33), Krissy Kilian (Derby-12:41),Amber Shanahan (Wichita North-12:52) and Scilian Nold (Valley Center-12:52) completed the top 5.
