Rim Rock Farm - Lawrence Coaches Invitational
Full Results from this meet can be found at www.freestaterunning.com
On Thursday the Big 12 announced that no athletic events would
be held, including
the KU sponsored Rimrock Classic. Herculean efforts by Lawrence
Free State's Steve
Heffernan and other area coaches resulted in Free State hosting
a high quality
invitational being put together in less than 24 hours on Friday.
Saturday morning saw
an abbreviated version of the KU Invitational (originally 150 teams
expected.) Bob
Timmons graciously hosted over 20 schools from Kansas and Missouri.
A moment of
silence was held before the meet began in rememberance of the victims
of Tuesday's
attacks and in honor of the men and women serving to protect and
rescue.
A summit meeting of Kansas's finest distance runners occured in
the girls race as
Leavenworth's Amy Hastings dueled with Riley County's Erin Mortimer,
both
undefeated this season. Hastings and Mortimer flew over the KU course
in tandem
through the Oakdale Covered Bridge and up a steep hill at the mile
mark, then down
steep downhills to the mile and a half mark. Hastings made a definitive
move up the
Billy Mills Hill to drop Mortimer, and then hammered home in 11:30
over the 2 mile
course. Mortimer followed in 11:43, with defending 6A state champion
Alysha
Galbraith (Olathe South-12:03), Amy Gouchnour (Olathe South-12:04)
and Bishop
Miege's Sarah Glatte-12:09 following.
In the team race Gary Kruger's Lee's Summit (MO) North squad showed
fine balance
to outrun Blue Valley Northwest 103-134 . Raymore-Peculiar placed
third with 137 and
top-ranked Olathe South fourth at 141.
The boys race saw Liberty (M0) star Adam Perkins hook up for the
early lead with
defending Kansas 4A champ Matt Noonan (Baldwin). Also running in
the lead pack
and pushing the pace was Pawnee Height's Christian Smith, from a
1A school
(Kansas's smallest class) near Great Bend. The three appeared to
alternate pushing
the pace over the first mile and a half of the course. After a steep
downhill and through
a new covered bridge, Perkins and Noonan began to gap Smith around
the flat
broomfield near the 2 mile mark. Perkins and Noonan entered the
Narrows (a wooded
narrow climb near the 2 1/2 mile mark) together. Near the Billy
Mills hill, Noonan
made a very strong move, dropping Perkins, and then dashing home
for a 28 second
victory in 16:03. Perkins followed with 16:31, and Dylan McClain
(Lawrence-16:52),
Brandon Daniels (Lee's Summit North-16:53), and Pawnee Height's
Smith (17:01)
rounded out the top five.
Lawrence High used five runners in the top fifteen to edge Liberty
(MO) 50-67 for the
team title. Independence (MO) Truman 104, Lawrence Free State 142,
and Shawnee
Mission East 167 rounded out the top five.
