Weekend Roundup 9/8/01

by Tony Bozarth

Olathe North - Hutchinson - Greeley County - Haven - Coffeyville -

Wamego Invitational - Eric Noonan surges to a win in 15:50,

Olathe North Invitational 9/5/01 @ Mahaffie Historical Site
A very rugged course and high temperatures and humidity held times down at the first Olathe North Invitational, but the competition was as hot and intense as the weather. Missouri power Kansas City Notre Dame de Sion took the first four places to defeat Olathe East, which took 6 of the top 15 places, 16-40, with Olathe North 3rd with 81.
Olathe East placed five runners in the top ten to win the boys title with 33 point, ahead of North Kansas City's (MO) 48. North Kansas City was led by a 1-2 finish from Blane Kauk and Spencer Dudley, with Olathe East's Zach Pope 3rd.

Hutchinson Invitational @ Carey Park, 9/6/01
Hutchinson's Morgan Bonds did it all at the Hutchinson Invitational, including helping design the course. (Morgan's mother is Huchinson coach Lisa Bonds). Bonds, last year's 6A state runner-up, romped to an early lead, then held on to win in 12:17. Katie Stockstill (McPherson-12:38) followed, while Kendra Chambers led Great Bend to the team win with a 3rd place finish in 12:50. Meliss Ortiz (Wichita West 12:54) and Amy Petty (Buhler-12:57) rounded out the top five.
David Williams (Wichita West) passed Tyler Roark (Hutchinson) at the 2 mile mark, then had to withstand Roark's late rush, Williams winning in 16:30 for 5k to Roark's 16:31. Ryan Wilson (Wichita Heights-16:39), Scott Rome (Hays-17;08) and Mike Staab (Hays-17:14) finished the top five.
Great Bend (defending 5A champs in both boys and girls divisions) finished their team sweep with a 50-86 win over Hays.
