The march to Rimrock Farm for next Saturday's
Kansas State Cross Country Championship's began this Saturday with regional championships
across the state. In 6A and 5A, three regionals were held with the top four
teams and fifteen individuals advancing. In 4A, 3A, and 2A-1A four regionals
were held with the top three teams and top 10 individuals advancing. 5k
for boys and 2 miles for girls at all races.
Here's 6A highlights
Shawnee
Mission Regional @ SM Park, Shawnee KS Van Rose's
Shawnee Mission Northwest program, having dominated the state for the last decade,
continued to roll. SMNW won the boys title with 30 points, and the girls
with 52. The boys race saw a large lead pack eventually whittled down over
the hills by Northwest's Ryan Hopper and Will Polk, who placed 1-2 in 16:14 and
16:15. Blue Valley North's Grady Sullivan was third at 16:16. Northwest's
Jason Pugh was fourth at 16:20 and Olathe East sophomore James Swartz was fifth
at 16:33. Northwest dominate the team race with all five scorers
in the top fifteen. SM East placed second with 84, followed by qualifiers
Olathe East at 112, and Aquinas at 119. Alysha Galbraith, Olathe
South's defending 6A state champion, rolled over the SM Park hills to edge BV
Northwest's Taryn May 11:49 to 11:54. May's team mate Kristina Rand was
third at 11:59, with SM South's Connie Abbott (12:07) and BV North's Laura Kelley
(12:16) rounding out the top five. A vicious regional assignment
found six of the top eight ranked schools in the state fighting for four spots.
Shawnee Mission Northwest (ranked #1) edged Blue Valley Northwest (tied
for #2) 52-59. Olathe South (tied for #2) was third at 95, while SM East
(#5) edged Aquinas (#6) for the last qualifying spot 109 to 110. Olathe
East (#8), with a key top runner hurt, slid to seventh.

Dodge City Regional Hutchinson's
Morgan Bonds, last years' 6A runnerup, cruised to a 12:20 victory in Dodge City.
Bonds beat Melissa Ortiz (Wichita West) by twenty seconds, with Amber Shanahan
(Wichita North-13:06) Michelle Galydardt ( Wichita Northwest- 13:09 and
Megan Cox (Maize-13:11) rounded out the top five. Maize edged Hutchinson 70-78
in the girls team race with Derby (83) and Dodge City (96) also qualifying. Wichita
West rolled to a fourty-point victory on the boys' side, with team leader David
Williams edging Hutchinson's Tyler Roark 17:18 to 17:19 for the individual title.
Wichita West rounded out the top five with David Lewis, 17:55; Ryan
Thomas, 18:21; and Chris Anderson, 18:21. West won the team title
with 33 points. Derby 73, Maize (80) and Hutchinson (116) also qualified.

Manhattan Regional @ Warner Park, Manhattan KS Amy
Hastings (Leavenworth) solidified her status as the 6A state favorite, rolling
over Warner Park's hills to score an impressive 11:18 win, leaving her competitor's
in the dust. Lawrence Free State's Mallory Richardson was second at 11:59,
with Harper McConnell (Manhattan) at 12:01 in third. Sarah Butler (Lawrence-12:08)
and Dean Seible (Emporia-12:20) finished fourth and fifth. In
the team race, Emporia continued to pack well, scoring 60 points to defeat Lawrence
(74) and Lawrence Free State (78). Manhattan finished out the team qualifiers
with 120. Dylan McClain won a fast 15:46 race to lead Lawrence
to the boy's team title. McClain shaded Wichita Height's Ryan Wilson (15:51)
with Justin Riley (Lawrence 16:04) and Washburn Rural team mates Joe Zimmer (16:20)
and Matt Swedlund (16:21) finishing the top five. Lawrence (ranked
#1 in the state) scored 52 to cross-town rival Free State's 67. Washburn
Rural (83) and Emporia (99) completed the state qualifiers in a regioon that matche
four of the state's top eight ranked teams.
