by Tony Bozarth

Topeka West Regional @ Stateland XC Course, Topeka KS

Defending 5A girls champs Trisa Nickoley (Shawnee Heights) ran through unseasonably warm weather to edge Hays' Pam Weber 12:36-12:37 for the individual girls title.  Defending 5A team champ Great Bend scored 46 to pull away from fellow qualifiers Shawnee Heights (72), Topeka Seaman (93) and McPherson (109).
Great Bend's Tanner Marshall won the boys title in 16:48 to lead his squad, also defending state champs, to a 40 to 58 victory over Hays (48).  Topeka Seaman (95) and Salina South (118) also qualified.

Blue Valley West continued it's stunning first year with a sweep of the SM Park regional title's.  Both boys and girls teams won, and Elle Pishney and Paul Hefferon won individual title'.  Pinshney, an all-stater last year for Blue Valley High, won in 11:39, thought to be the fastest ever on the new SM Park layout.  BV West's boys won with 37 points, with Gardner-Edgerton 59, Kansas City Turner 65, and Bishop Miege 96 the other qualifers.  In a glaring example of the inequity of Kansas's current regional set-up, only five complete teams ran in  the girls race. Blue Valley West edged Bishop Miege 30-36, with Paola (65) and Gardner-Edgerton (114) also qualifying.
