TOPEKA KS 9/08/01--5A defending state champ Trish Nicoley avenged last week's defeat by Harper McConnell (Manhattan) at the Manhattan Invitational, and Lee's Summit (MO) crossed the state line to win their second big invitational in two weeks in girls division of the Topeka West Invitational. Nicoley, also 5A 400 and 800 track champion, pulled away late from McConnell to win 19:40 to 19:53 over a rugged 5K course. Susan Butler of Lawrence (who won last Saturday's Aquinas Invitational) was third. Nicoley was fighting a cold but appeared smooth throughout the race. Justin Riley of Lawrence won in 16:30 over Topeka Washburn Rural's Kent Swedlund (16:34). Combined with team-mate Dylan McClain's third place 16:42, Riley led Lawrence to 45-55 win over Lee's Summit (M0) (last year's Missouri 4A runnerup. (Lawrence defeated defending Kansas 6A champ SMNW last week in the Aquinas Invitational).
