Eric Noonan of Baldwin surged away from Clay Center's Joe
Moore in mid-race in a match-up of Class 4A's top two runners,
and led Baldwin to the team title at the Wamego Invitational. Noonan
burned the 4A state meet course in 15:50, with Moore finishing at
16:13 for 5K. Griffin Lee of DeSoto-Mill Valley was third
in 16:45, while Todd Spreer of team runner-up Wamego was
fourth in 16:57, with Baldwin's Erik Black fifth at 17:01.
Baldwin easily won the team title with 56 point. Wamego was second
with 86, Clay Center third at 135 in a match-up of the top three
teams in the Kansas 4A polls.
Brittany Hill of Hugoton edged Carissa Land of Andover
12:14 to 12:18 in the girls race (2 miles). While Andover, a state-ranked
5A power who split into two schools this year, may have debuted
in 4A with a 58 to 76 victory over El Dorado. Clay Center was third
with 116. (Kansas schools don't receive their cross country class
qualifications until early October). In class 3A-1A competition,
Riley County's Erin Mortimer ran off to a 34 second victory
in 12:00, while 3A rivals Sabetha (80) and Northern Heights (83)
dueled with defending 2A champ Olpe (87) a close third. Keen
Umbehr of Alma-Wabunsee won the 3A-1A boys race (17:13) with
Riley County (69) winning big over Sabetha (107).
