Notes by Phil Weishaar

Last Jan. I posted a memo about Trinadad long jumper Cleavon Dillon moving
to Leavenworth Kansas for the year because his Dad was attending the
military college at Fort Leavenworth. Dillon won not only the long jump at
the state meet last week end in 23' 9" but also won the TJ in 47' 2 3/4, the
100 in an auto 10.52 and the 200 in 21.79. His 40 points help Leavenworth
to a one point win (51 to 50 ) over Junction City in the 6A (largest schools
division).

Junction City is located next to army base Fort Riley and sure enough they
got big points from Florida army transfer Anthony Thomas with a state best
37.77 in the 300IH. Thomas also was 3rd in 110HH, and ran on winning 4 x
400 and 2nd place 4 x 100 team.

Dillon is reported to be going to TCU next year. Thomas is a junior.
One thing not hard to predict is the team winner in class 5A. Liberal
High School boys team won there ELEVENTH straight (Yes 11) team title
scoring 144 points. 2nd place had 64. From the looks of their squad the
streak is not going to stop soon.

The Liberal girls extended their streak to 8 straight although the score
was much closer (76 1/2 to 63).

Liberal is not just a sprint factory. They score everywhere and
sometimes with lots of people. Boys scored 265 points in regional meet.
Marysville's product Kendra Wecker won the javelin(162') but has been
hampered by a hamstring pull.

Best individual competition was in the 5A boys high jump with both Jessie
Sims of Paola and Kyle Lancaster of Fort Scott clearing 7'0".
Wichita State's Cessna Stadium is being refurbished to accomodate 8
lanes. Construction is suppose to start tomorrow in removing several rows of
seats on both sides of stadium. With all of its seating (25,000?) it
becomes a great place to host a track meet.

6A

All sprint and hurdle times run into the wind.

6A Boys: Cleavon Dillon won four titles to lead Leavenworth to one point
team victory over Junction City. Dillon won the LJ (23-9), TJ (47-2.25), 200
(21.79) and, most impressively the 100 into a wind of at least 15 mph at
10.52. Junction City was led by Anthony Thomas's 37.77 300H win. Scott
Loftin (Blue Valley North) repeated his distance triple of last year
(4:21.08/ 9:23.18/ 1:57.10 coming from fifth in the final 50 meters.) Drew
Morano (Aquinas) won a 48.42 400, Lawrence Free State a 7:58.87 4 x 800, and

Wichita Height's Jamaal Holt took a 6-10 HJ victory, and Maize's Kris Hinson
took a shot/disc double in 58-5.25 (over Wichita South's Brian Baker 57-2.25)
and 168-8.

6A Girls: Despite Manhattan's Julie Curtis's best efforts, Leavenworth again
rolled to another title (it's sixth straight). Curtis won the 100H (14.58),
300H (43.20, winning by almost 4 seconds), and 200 (24.85). Maize's Liz
Kramer took the 1600 (5:13.16) and 800 (2:14.61), while Leavenworth's Amy
Hastings took an 11:00.20 3200 before placing second to Kramer in the 1600
(5:18.47). Dionne Williams (Junction City) edged Jan Seale (Blue Valley

won the 400 in 56.16. Williams anchored Junction City to a 48.48 4 x 100
win, while Leavenworth (3:58.7) and Blue Valley Northwest (9:43.21) took the

and Dionna Thomas (SM West) the triple in 38-0.25. Erin Wessely (SM East)
won the vault at 12-0.while Jessica McFarland (Derby) won the shot (41-10.5),

Southeast) the HJ (5-6)

5A

5A Boys: Liberal rolled again winning the team title by 80 over Ft. Scott.
The individual highlight came in the boys HJ, where 25,000 fans became
rivited to a high jump duel between Paola's Jesse Sims and Ft. Scott's Kyle
Lancaster. Both soared over 7-0, and then each had close misses at 7-2.25,
Sims winning on misses. As each jumped the entire stadium hushed and even
the competitors warming up on the infield gathered on the stadium's south end
to watch.
Carlos Aslup led Liberal to the team title, winning the 100 (11.14) and
200 (21.87) and anchoring a 42.42 4 x 100 winner. Topeka Seaman's Ryan Irvin
took the 400 (48.71) and anchored a 3:20.95 4 x 400 winner. Ft. Scott's Josh
Lattimer took a 202-0 JT from Andover's Andy Thomas (198-9). Gilford
Livingston added to Liberal's point total with a 14.22 110H win, but cramped
while leading the 300H. Liberal's Joshy Madathil tripled in the distances,
winning the 1600 (4:31.23), placing second to Wichita Kaupan's Scott Mitchell
in the 3200 (9:37.79 to 9:41.81) and third in the 800.

5A Girls: Liberal (76) also repeated it's team title here, but was pressed
by Salina Central (63.5). Trisha Nicoley (Topeka Shawnee Heights) was the
individual star, winning unpressed victories in the 400 (56.73), 1600
(5:16.45) and 800 (2:19.03) with well-timed kicks. Arkansas City's Jennifer
Kuchenberger took the sprints (12.46/ 25.88), while Sarah Glatt (Shawnee
Mission Bishop Miege) took a toght 3200 (11:29.42) from Mica Land (Andover,
11:32.29) . Ashleigh Keats (Salina Central) took the 100H (15.07) and JT
(137-9). Topeka Shawnee Height's Meg Foster (135-3) and Great Bend's Cayci
Carter (135-0) also broke 135-0 in the JT, Carter coming back to win the SP
at 41-5. Liberal won titles with a 50.30 4 x 100, 4:00.77 4 x 400, and
Ashlee Yoxall's LJ (17-6.75) and TJ (36-2) wins. Kellye West (Ft. Scott)

9:50.29.

4A

4A Boys: Baldwin did everything right to outscore Clay Center and repeat as
team champs. Matt Noonan led Baldwin with wins in the 3200 (9:38.77 over Joe
Moore-Clay Center-9:40.00) and the 1600 (4;22.99). Noonan also placed
second in the 800 (1:58.46) to team mate Eric Black (1:57.58). Black had won
the JT Friday night with a toss of 215-0, over team mate Hugh Murphy's 196-0.

Covington took the LJ (22-6.25) and 100 (11.22). Colby's Zach Brown, in his
first year of track, finished his career with a 49.21 400 victory, while
tough throws saw Coby Cost (El Dorado) win the DT 175-6 and Nick Long
(Ulysses) the SP 56-4.25, both over TMP-Marian's Dick Barnes (55-3.25, 165-8).

4A Girls: Pratt edged Marysville for the girls title. The 400 was the key
event here, as Pratt's Ashley Melichar (4A record holder, but sitting out
last year injured), met Nickerson's Kristie Harmon (the defending champ).
Last week at regionals, the two had raced with Melichar breaking 56.00, but
headwinds prevented that here. Melichar set a hard pace down the backstretch
then pulled away in the homestretch, winning 56.69 to 57.46.
Clay Center's Teresa Cyer (134-5) won a tense DT competetion from Abby
Dutt (Abiline-132-4). Marysville's Kendra Wecker couldn't run due to an
injured hamstring, but that couldn't keep her from posting an impressive
162-11 JT win. Krystal Bowes (Louisborg) threw145-10, and Lea Shireman of
Girard 135-5. Wecker's teammate Courtney Bruna won the 100 (12.41) and
