news of high school track and field and cross country in Colorado

Alexis Joyce and Natalie Hughes starred as expected, along with cross-sport athletes Megan Kaltenbach and Ethan Smith. Hurdle star Beau Walker was injured and did not compete. Roc Alexander gets second state sprint record with 21.02 200m to go with his 10.45 of 3 weeks ago.

Highlights of the 4A-5A meets
(from a CO stats junkie, sort of like DyeStat)

Just thought I would give you a update from Colorado. For starters,
Megan Kaltenbach (Smoky Hill HS) finished her junior varsity soccer
season 3 weeks ago. I approached her about coming out for track for the
final three weeks of the season, and she was excited to do so. Her very
first practice consisted of 2 x 1600 in 5:55, 5:44 with an 11 minute
recovery. Five days after her first workout she competed in our league
championships and won the 3200 in 11:38 and ran a 2:19 split on our 4x8.
One week later she competed in the regional meet in the 4x8 only, as her
11:38 pre-qualified her for the state meet, and ran a 2:17.29 split plus
a 61.05 split on our 4x4. This past monday, exactly two weeks after her
first workout she did 2 x 1600 in 5:25, 5:33 with a 8 minute recovery.
So, we knew she was prepared to run fast at state. Two days ago she won
the 3200 with an 11:07.39. She went out in 73, not my idea, first mile
in 5:27, dropped the pack (which consisted of the 2nd, and 3rd placers
form state cross) on lap 5. She only closed in 86, obviously lacking
fitness, but still won by 10 seconds. Granted she had played soccer
this spring, her fitness was suspect - but her guts and raw talent were
obvious. Hey, 11:07 probably ranks as one of the top 6 or 8 times ever
run in Colorado and had she been smarter the first two laps she probably
would have broken 11:00. Obviously, she will crush 11:00 before all is
said and done and may approach Melody Fairchild's 10:36 state record.

Here are some other notable performances from the state meet, maybe the
best ever in Colorado.

BOYS

  • Ethan Smith, Loveland HS, Loveland, CO won the 5A
800 in 1:52.53 - he just came out for track 6 weeks ago (another soccer
player). Jared Scott, Lewis-Palmer HS, Colorado Springs, won the 4A
    1600 in 4:13.12 with a 2:04 final 800.
  • Jon Severy of Aspen HS won the 3A 3200 in 9:25.49 by 16 seconds (an all time Colorado best regardless of classification, although Goucher was injured his senior track season). Severy ran a 9:23 in Provo (higher altitude than Denver) about a month ago.
  • Roc Alexander, Wasson HS, Colorado Springs 21.02 5A 200 meter champ and new state record, coupled with a 100m state championship - he set the state record of 10.45 three weeks ago.
  • Travis Anderson, Westminister HS, Westminster 47.14 400m 5A champ.
  • Gerren Crochet, Boulder HS, Boulder 36.73 300m hurdles 5A champ, Highlands Ranch HS,
  • Highlands Ranch 3:15.42 1600m relay and 7:46.83 3200m relay 5A champs for both. While our high school, Smoky Hill, Aurora, ran a 7:48.81 for 2nd.
  • M.J. Flaum, Northglenn HS, Northglenn 60'11" 5A shot put champ (he
threw 62'8" earlier in the year).
  • Bryan Dillon of Sterling HS, Sterling, CO had a 1:53.37, 4:17.97, 9:47.47 - nice triple.
  • Jared Scott also had a 9:40.62 one hour after a 1:54.12 800.
  • Brighton HS Sophomore Troy Hernandez, defeated Jared Scott in the 4A 3200 in 9:36.98 with a final 400 of 61 after a tactical initial 7 laps. He also placed 3rd in the 4A 1600 (behind Scott and Dillon in 4:21, he also ran a 9:24 3200 earlier in the season).
  • Mullen HS, Denver, won the 4A 800m relay in 1:26.84, the fastest time in any classification.

GIRLS

Some impressive girls marks beside Megan's, which was the fastest 3200
in any classification:

  • Alexis Joyce, George Washington HS, Denver, 11.59, 23.99 - obvious champ in both.
  • Annie Bersagel, 5A 1600
    champ - 5:04.99 (and 2nd to Megan in 3200 in 11:16.24).
  • George Washington's 400m relay (which included Alexis) ran a 47.69 and 1600m relay 3:49.99 (without Alexis).
  • Ashley Pfeffer, Thornton HS, Denver tripled 39'7 3/4".
  • Highlands Ranch's 3200m relay in 9:21.72.
  • Twink Krainik, also of Highlands Ranch, shattered Beau Walkers', Montbello HS, state record in the 300 hurdles with a 41.35 to win by nearly 4 seconds.  Beau was hurt and did not compete.
  • Top 4A girl was Natalie Hughes, Palisade HS, Palisade,CO. She is a junior and pulled off her third consecutive "triple" with a 2:12.78, and 5:04.90 wins, and an 11:18.02 3200 win one hour after her 800. She now has 9 individual titles in track plus two in cross. She was the 4A cross champ in 19:03 last year while Megan won the 5A title in 18:29 on the same course. Megan had a frustrating season on jv soccer and claims she will only run track next year, but will continue with club soccer. We'll see.
