Girls 4x100 Relay

Poly 46.59

Highlights
Wilson (Long Beach) false-started out of a super field, with Poly (LB) and a great crew at the starting line. Lanes 5 and 7 were empty at the start. Poly (LB) was super through three legs, with the third runner up on the anchor pretty good at the hand-off. With a huge margin Poly won at 46.59, with Angel Perkins (Gahr, Cerritos) moving up nicely through the field as the race went along. The Poly team was three ninth graders and a senior. Senior Candice Baucham led off, with frosh Chanda Picott, Shalonda Solomon, and Jasmine Lee running the last three legs. Wow!!! mid-45's with three frosh athletes last week at Arcadia.
Stockdale of Bakersfield loooked upset in a season best 47.28 to win race 2, one of the best times out of the Central Section.

Girls 4x800 meter Relay

Wilson 9:18.65

Early rising Wilson wins the first of many gold medals at 8:30 am as anchor Ashley Freeman wraps up a fine 9:18.65

Highlights
By 8:30 when this event started the sun had broken through once, but lost the war with the clouds and it was still cool, but fairly calm, and with a good warm-up great for some two-lap running. No surprise at the start, with Long Beach Poly and Long Beach Wilson taking the lead, with Wilson an eight meter lead at the end of the first lap at 66.5. The lead stretched to 20 meters down the backstretch, with Arroyo Grande moving up to challenge Poly for second at that point. With 200 to go it appeared Wilson could be at or under 2:20 for the first leg, some good relay running! Wilson finished at 2:21.1 at the end of the first leg, with Poly 2:25.1. Lashinda Demus, the nation's top 300 Hurdler and a former HS National Athlete of the Year showed up on leg two for Wilson, stretching the lead out through a 63.3 opening 400!! As Announcer Keith Conning pointed out, Lashinda was hurting a bit on the homestretch, but she still finsihed in 2:18.6, with Wilson 4:39.4 through two legs, sub 9:20 pace (a 2:20 average). Wilson romped with about an 80 meter lead through the first part of leg number three, with a 63.8 second opener for Wilson on leg number three. 2:21.9 for leg number three, with the total of 7:01.2 just over a 2:20 average. A 65 second opening 400 for Ashley Freeman for Wilson, with Ashley continuing unpressed through her 2:17.4. Poly anchored in 2:20.5. Wilson was sub 9:20, in the mid 9:18's, with some competition probably putting them 5-8 seconds faster. (Wilson team - McKenzie Hill, Lashinda Demus, Jasmine Collins, and Ashley Freeman).

Girls DMR

Hoover Glendale 12:25.61

Highlights
Upland, Brea, and Etiwanda led through a 77 first 400. At 2:36.2 Etiwanda had a big lead, but Brea had a strong third lap to move into the lead with half a lap to go. Burroughs (Burbank) closed down right at the exchange with a 3:51.2 split for the first two teams. Burroughs was 60.8 on the second leg, with Etiwanda and Brea moving up to take the lead one-half lap into the 800 leg. Etiwanda had about 150 meters on Anita Siraki and Hoover at the start of the anchor leg. Siraki quickly cranked a 2:20 first 800 to move into the lead and continued to press! At 3:34.7 for the 1200 she was on her way. Siraki finished in 4:49.1, with her squad recording a 12:25.63.

Interview
Anita Siraki
Asked what she thought at the start of her leg (which had her in about sixth place): "I just wanted to catch the first place runner. I knew she had a big lead, but I thought that I could do it."
Asked where she was in training, "We ran a lot of miles this week. This is kind of a build-up time to get ready for our peak for the state meet, and I have been working hard."
Asked her goal for the State Meet, "To run under 10:00!"
