KANSAS 4/7/01 - 

A number of meets Friday night, including the Junction City Invitational, and Emporia State Relays, were postponed due to high winds, lightning, and the threat of tornado. Those that ran often had their marks held down due to conditions.

Baldwin Inv

4A State Cross Country champ Matt Noonan opened his season with easy victories in the 1600/ 3200 at 4:37.7/ 10:22.2. Noonan won the 1600 by almost 7 seconds and the 32 by almost 40. Sister Megan won the same double in 5:42.5 and 12:08.7 to win by similar margins. Jesse Sims of Paola won the HJ at 6-8. Eric Black tossed the javelin 193-7 to help the Baldwin boys win the team title 118-97 over Lansing. The Baldwin girls dominated with a 153-82 win over second place Perry-Lecompton. Ten teams competed.

Reno County Classic 
@ Buhler HS. 

Hutchinson Trinity's Ryan Ketchum, had a great series in the discus, opening with a 181-2, then tossing 166-9, 171-0, and 173-6. Second went to Hutchinson's Shawn Jones at 156-8. Ketchum also won the shot at 55-8. Sean Buford (Hutchinson), the defending 6A TJ champ, won four events. the LJ (20-5.5) TJ (44-6.5), 110 H (15.4) and teamed with Marquis Baugh, Mike Sheffler, and DeAngelo Green to win the 400 R (44.8). Strong cross winds hampered the jumps. Robbie Chance (Hutchinson) won the JT at 195-2. Morgan Bonds (Hutchinson) state girls 6A cross country runner-up this fall, honed her speed, with winds in the 200 and 800. Bonds finished second to Nickerson's Krista Harmon (defending 4A state 400 champ) in the 400, 60.00 to 60.04. Bonds and Harmon ran in seperate sections. Hutchinson's Kierra Stokes won the LJ (16-1), TJ (35-3.5) and 100 H (16.6).

Alex Francis Relay 
@ Ft. Hays State U.

Hays KS 5A state champs Liberal dominated boys and girls team scoring in windy conditions. The Liberal boys won the team title with 239 points. Ulysses placed second (90) and Quinter was third (60). The Liberal girls scored 244 to defeat Ulysses 126 and Quinter 57. TMP-Marian's Dick Barnes won the javelin by 26 feet with at toss of 172-9, and also won the disc at 156-1 in tough conditions. Plainville's TJ Stabb won the shot at 53-2.5, with Liberal's Curtis Grote at 52-10.75, and TMP's Barnes at 50-.5. The meet is named in honor of Coach Alex Francis, who coached Ft. Hays track teams from the 1940's to the early 1980's.

Coffeyville Relays 
@ Field-Kinley HS

Coffeyville KS Girard's Leah Shireman won the girls JT with a 130-11 toss. Arkansas City edged Bartlesville OK 96-84 for the team title in the meet which brought together many of SE Kansas's top teams. Ft. Scott won the boys side.

Roeland Park KS Five time defending 6A state champion Leavenworth (266) blasted the field in the girls meet, winning by 99 points over second place Bishop Miege. Coach Tamra Strano's team won fourteen events. Tiffany Bilderback won the 100 (12.32) and 400 (60.00). April Heath won the 200 (26.4). Amy Hastings won both the 1600 and 3200 (5:24.0/ 12:02.9) Jessica Riley the hurdles (16.2/ 51.4) and Renee Sidney tripled in the jumps (4-10 HJ, 9-6 PV, and 34-4 TJ). Alissa Adkins won the JT 102-3 and DT 99-5.5 in windy conditions. On the boys side, Leavenworth edged Bishop Miege 143-138, with KC Rockhurst third at 105. Leavenworth's Cleavon Dillon, the nation's leading indoor LJ, won the 100 easily in 10.42.

Scott Loftin (Blue Valley North), defending 6A cross country champ, won the 1600 in 4:23.5 and anchored Blue Valley North to a 10:58.7 DMR triumph. Jimmy Carter (Aquinas) won the HJ at 6-5. St. Joseph Central (MO) edged Lawrence Free State 92-89 for the boys team title. Jackie Dubois (Lawrence Free State) doubled in the distances (5:31.3/ 12:22) on a breezy day. Sara Fletcher (SM North) won the 300 H at 48.8 Erin Wesley (SM East) won the PV at 10-9, and Marlene Zwarich (SM North) the LJ (18-7).

Emporia State Relays 

The Emporia State Relays, postponed from Friday due to weather, were held Monday 4/9/01 in glorious sunny 80 degree weather. Olathe North won the 6A-5A boys title, winning five out of six relays contested, with Raytown South coming from Missouri to take the girls title. Olathe East placed second in both the boys and girls divisions. Conway Springs won both the boys and girls titles in the 4A-1A division. Competitors from both divisions competed together with team scores figured separately. Trish Culbertson, Burlington's defending 4A cross country champion, used a brilliant move with 800 to go to pull away from Missouri cross country all-stater Stefanie Nicoll (Raytown South), with 5A state cross country champ Trisha Nicolay (Shawnee Heights) third. Culbertson clocked an 11:44.8. Conway Springs' Ashley Ast won the javelin at 131-1, and teammate Amy King won the 100 (12.56), TJ (36-6) and ran a leg on the winning 4 x 400 (4:12.6). Olathe East's Allison Bessler, the defending 6A 400 champion, opened her season with a 2:26 800 leg to give East a big lead on a 4:28.9 SMR. (Emporia State runs the SMR 800-400-200-200). Olathe North's Darren Sproles had a hand in four victories, taking the 100 (10.99) and running legs on the 4 x 100 (43.3), 4 x 200 (1:30.95) and SMR (3:42.79). Carlos Sanchez (Emporia) raised his PR 5 inches to win the HJ in 6-8 over Olathe East's Brandon Rodgers (6-6)
