KANSAS 4/1/01 -
Top schools from both Missouri and Kansas opened their season at Blue
Valley Northwest HS on 3/30/01. Lee's Summit's men (169) outscored
Missouri rival Blue Springs (116.5) for the victory with Kansas power
Olathe East (78.5) third. On the women's side, five time defending Kansas
6A state champ Leavenworth looks powerful again, scoring 145 points, to
beat Missouri schools Kansas City Park Hill South (94.33) and Blue Springs
(93.5). Individual highlights included a 1-2 finish in the highs from Blue
Springs' Justin Barge (14.4) and Curtis Cooper (14.6), with Barge also
winning the 300H (40.0). Earl Jack (Blue Springs) dominated the throws,
winning the shot by almost 5 feet at 55-7.5, then winning the discus with
a 157-7 on a still, heavy night. Leavenworth's Cleavon Dillon, the nations
leading indoor long jumper, competed only in the 100, scoring a convincing
10.56 victory. Amy Hastings led Leavenworth's charge with a 5:23.2/
11:28.5 distance double. The lancers also got victories from Tiffany
Bilderback in the 400 (59.83) T. Baxter in the vault (9-6) and their 4 x
100 (51.3). K. Cook (Kansas City Park Hill South) scored a sprint double
in 12.4/ 26.2 over strong fields, and teammate J. Mathewson opened her
season with an impressive 15.3/ 48.5 hurdle double.

The Shawnee Mission South
Relays, a traditional season opener for much of the Kansas City
area, saw a number of strong performances. In the women's pole vault, SM
East added to their strong tradition as Wesely (no first name) won with a
national class mark of 11-0. Megan Robinson won the 100 in 12.68, and led
SM West to victory in the 800 sprint medley (2:02.48) and 4 x 200
(1:53.9). Blue Valley North's Scott Loftin, who swept the Kansas 6A state
meet 800-1600-3200 last year, opened his season with a 9:32.78 win in the
3200. Shawnee Mission Northwest's distance crew dominated with wins in the
men's 4 x 1600 (19:04.99) DMR (11:17.11) and women's DMR (13:30.2). SM
East's Jeremy Nelson opened with a quick 100 (10.68) victory.
At Wellsville's Snowball Relays
on 3/27, Paola's Jesse Sims opened his
season with a 6-8 HJ win.
3/29/01 The Washburn Rural Invitational
(Topeka) featured a season
opening 48.8 400 win for Ryan Irvin (Topeka Seaman). State Football Player
of the Year Darren Sproles (Olathe North) won a quick 10.97/ 22.02 sprint
double. Rural's Matt Swedlund won a 1600/800 double, with 4:28.52 in the
1600. Manhattan's Julie Curtis opened with a 25.56 in the 200 and also won
a 14.62/ 44.66 hurdle double. 5A state cross country champion Trish
Nicolay (Shawnee Heights) won an impressive 400 (58.43), 800 (2:27.36),
and 1600 (5:26.19) triple. Nicolay narrowly won the 1600 over Manhatten's
Harper McConnell (5:26.26). McConnell won the 3200 in 11:42.24. Shawnee
Heights Meg Foster opened her javelin season with a 118-3 win.
3/30/01 The Liberal Relays
featured a 7-0 HJ win by Rosebury (no first
name) of Boise City OK. In an interesting team matchup between the
defending 5A (Liberal) and 6A (Hutchison) boys state champions, Liberal
dominated, winning 219 to 109 in the 12 team meet. Liberal's Carlos Alsup
opened his season with a 10.60/ 21.97 sprint double, with team mate
Gilford Livingston scoring a 13.93/ 41.16 hurdle double. Ashlee Yoxall's
17-4.25 LJ led Liberal's girls (also defending state champs) to a
convincing 120 point win over Garden City.
Wichita Height's boys have won five straigth City League title's and
may be on their way to a sixth after dominating the Wichita East
Invitational. Height's won the boys title by over 100 points, and doubled
back to win the girls title over East. Highlights included a fast 100 win
for Wichita East's Lacey Horner over Wichita West's Cartez Brown, both
timed in 10.7
Hays High dominated the Jim Maska Relays at Ft. Hays State, led by
Marcus Watt's triple jump wins (43-0.5, 21-4, 13-0), with Hays-TMP-Marian
senior Dick Barnes scoring a notable 54-1.5 shop put win. Norton won the
girls title.
