American Ritzenhein Creates Surprise
- IAAF feature story by Laura Arcoleo

It was a muddy day in Belgium on the

Rockford MI sr Dathan Ritzenhein, stung by his loss to Matt Tegenkamp at the US Winter XC Nationals last month, skipped the rest of indoor season to concentrate on the World CC Championships.  It paid off splendidly today as Ritz soared to a 3rd place at Ostend, Belgium in 25:46.  Tekenkamp finished 5th nine seconds further back.  They were the only non-Africans in the top 13.

Despite his US exploits (2-time Foot Locker Cross Country national champion, 2-time 2-mile national champion, unbeaten in a high school race in two years), Ritzenhein was unknown on the world stage.  An IAAF preview on the junior men's race at Ostend listed 12 "names to watch" and Ritzenhein was  not mentioned.

Ritzenhein was the first American to medal since Keith Brantley was third in 1981.  The Michigan runner surged past early leader Nicholas Kemboi of Kenya in the last kilometer when he realized he had a chance to get on the award podium.  Writing on the IAAF web site, Phil Minshull asked Ritzenhein for his feelings about running with the Africans:

"I came into this race joking about the fact that we had little experience facing the Africans, and were just hoping to beat one of them," the Michigan schoolboy laughed. "I just didn't know what to expect coming into this race so I thought I would just commit myself and go out hard".

Lap results published by the IAAF only went down to Ritzenhein.  After lap 1, Ritz was 8th in a lead pack that was separated by only one second.  Ritz finished lap 2 moving up to fifth  in 13:38 , as the eventual 2-1 runners Duncan Lebo of Kenya and  Kenenisa Bekele of Ethiopia (13:29 and 13:30) pulled ahead.   After lap 3 there was more spacing as eventual winner Bekele 19:17 took a 14-second lead over Lebo and Ritzenhein was fourth at 19:42.     At the finish Bekele 25:04 had 33 seconds on Lebo and 42 on Ritzenhein.

Tegenkamp's Wisconsin freshman teammate Josh Spiker was 24th in 27:02, with Ian Dobson 39th in 27:34, Fernando Cabada 71st in 28:16, and Oakton VA sr Matt Maline 93rd in 28:42.

USA was fourth in the team scoring (top four) with 71 points.  Kenya 24 (2-4-6-12) edged Ethiopia 25 (1-7-8-9), followed by Uganda 68.

Quotes

Dathan Ritzenhein (Rockford, Mich.): "I had no idea what to expect because I had never been in a competition like this before. I thought I'd go out with the lead
pack and if I died, I died - but I didn't. Matt (Tegenkamp) and I worked very well together. Every time the Kenyan would break away, either Matt or I would run up
and catch him and the other would follow close behind. The cold wasn't bad at all, but this is the muddiest conditions I've ever seen. This feels great, I knew I was in
great shape, and I'm so glad that Matt was able to do awesome too."

Matt Tegenkamp (Madison, Wisc.): "Dathan (Ritzenhein) and I got a great start and ended up out front and we weren't going to let each other go, and it worked
really well for both of us. He ran awesome - he ran so tough. It was a good race. I was hoping to finish in the top-20 today so this is very nice. I couldn't get into a
rhythm and my legs got really tired from running in the mud. The mud dried up a little today so it's very sticky and that made it tough for everyone."

Josh Spiker (Madison, Wisc.): "This was fun. I love the mud and the cold conditions, so I was happy - it was a blast. Today's conditions are a perfect example
of what cross country is about, and everyone had to deal with the same conditions. My goal was to get out quickly and push hard for as long as I could."

Matt Maline (Herndon, Va.): "I got out a little slow, about 10 meters behind the pack. A little later I started drifting a little further behind the pack. It was fun for
about the first two laps, then after that it just hurt a lot. Every time I hit the mud it felt like I lost a place or two, but that was my fault. It really threw me off."

Ian Dobson (Palo Alto, Calif.): "It went alright. I wanted to get into the top-30 but I didn't quite make it. I pretty much keyed off of one Moroccoan the whole
time because I knew they had a good team and I did a good job of working with him. It was a tough race for me. These were the worse conditions I've ever faced. I
couldn't find any rhythm at all."

Fernando Cabada Jr. (Fayetteville, Ark.): "I got off to a nice start, but the mud was just too thick for me and I just couldn't move fast. I expected to finish in the
top 30 and I started out with them, but I was just too weak to run in this type of course. The cold didn't bother, but the mud was just too tough."
