Boys Distance Medley Relay

John Jefferson's 4:06 PR "running scared" holds off Alan Webb's storming 4:03

Atlantic Community, FL's John Jefferson was able to hold off the thunder of South Lake', VA's Alan Webb despite Webb's 4:03.0 1600-meter split in the Boys Distance Medley Relay.

"Thanks to Webb I got a new PR running scared", said the AC senior who anchored the team to a meet record 10:02, second best all time. "I was going up against a legend and I kept pushing, I didn't want him to catch me.  I wanted to see if he was near me then decided to go as hard as I could with 3 laps to go and run as hard as I could, if he beats me he beats me." Jefferson's split was 4:06, while his twin brother Sean blasted a 3:03.4 lead off 1200.

Webb, who trailed by over 50-meters at the baton exchange charged a 26.9 first 200-meters in an attempt to catch John Jefferson. "I felt that" commented Webb about his first lap, "I went out fast, it's hard to not go out fast when you are 70-meters behind. I am disappointed that we didn't win, they deserved it though."

Webb did not expect Atlantic Community to have the lead they did, "No, no, no definitely not, I didn't expect (Jefferson) to be that far ahead." It looked as if Webb might be able to take over the race with 800-meters remaining but Jefferson started a surge that Webb could not respond to.

Rockford Repeats

Rockford Michigan's Linsey Blaisdell overcame Boys and Girls' Akilah Vargas with 800 meters to go to clinch the NIC title along with establishing a new meet record in the girls distance medley relay with a time of 11:58.05.

Blaisdell, running the 1600m leg, trailed Vargas by close to 40 meters when she was handed the baton but that lead diminished and with a quick burst of speed at the half way point Blaisdell left her competition behind.

"I wanted to pass her quick so I could break her mentally" stated Blaisdell "that's what happened to me earlier in the season and it worked."

The race was filled with a number of lead changes by the Rockford, New York City's nationally renowned Boys and Girls and New Hampshire's Manchester Central. After the 1200-meter leg Central was a step ahead of Boys and Girls but Boys and Girls finally established a healthy lead at the 400-meter leg exchange and by the beginning of the 800-meter leg had secured a 50-meter lead.

The lead dwindled to 40-meters by the leg's end before Blaisdell began her long drive to victory. "(My Coach) told me to go for it right away and to stay with her for a few laps then pass her," said Blaisdell. It seems as if that is exactly what she did.

Boys 800-meter run

Pre-race favorite Ahmed upset, finishes third; Sylvester triumphs

Marc Sylvester, who last spring suffered a collapsed lung, cruised to a meet record 1:52.75 besting James Hatch (1:54.67) of Boulder, CO and Said Ahmed, 1:54.72, of Boston, MA. Trent Ritter, from St. Paul, MN, running virtually alone in the 3rd heat finished fourth in 1:54.93.

Sylvester took it out hard, clocking a 26.12 for the first 200-meters, until 1000-meter specialist Ahmed took the helm and slowed the race to a 400-meter split of 55.8 (29 second and change 2nd lap). Brandon Hodges, from Aurora, AR trailed close behind while Sylvester sat in third. Ahmed continued his lead through 600 (1:25.4) before being passed by Sylvester who drove home with his meet record performance.

Hatch narrowly clipped Ahmed for second place. "It's good to make mistakes," insisted Ahmed, "I love them, I learn from them." Though it was hard to pinpoint where exactly the Boston English star went wrong, it seems though that he lacked his familiar trademark kick. "I have been running fast 1000s, never trained for the 800, you have to run a lot of 200s and 100s, I haven't done anything the whole week, I was resting." Ahmed hopes to dip under 1:50 this spring, "I makes me work harder, I came down here to win but it didn't happen today."

Girls 800-meter run

Cook 2:15.39 overcomes Feldkamp, Otstott

The race went out in a steady, if not slow 33.0, but the pace remained constant as Petersburg, VA's Nicole Cook grabbed the lead at 400-meters (1:07.8). She was overcome by Megan Olds during the third lap and led the pack at 600-meters with a split of 1:42.14 (34.34) before Cook regained the lead and narrowly edged out Theresa Feldkamp (Lorain, Ohio) and Kelley Otstott (Fairfax, VA); all three runners were timed at 2:15.

Curtis comes through in end, the very end!
Lockhart loses another photo finish

Louisville, Kentucky's Bobby Curtis hardly led the one-mile run, yet he was still able to win. Curtis took over the lead at the 5,279-foot mark outleaning VA's Bobby Lockhart for the win in a repeat of Lockhart's loss to Nick Schneider in the Millrose Mile last month.

MD's Shane Stroup cranked out a 28.6 second first lap and followed with a 59.44 split at 400-meters. "I went for it, I didn't get a good start at Millrose and when Bobby Lockhart came up on me I tried to stay with him."

Stroup continued to lead at 600 (1:31.1) followed by Curtis, Lockhart, and Millrose winner Nick Schneider; and at 800-meters (2:03-Stroup, Lockhart, Curtis, GA's Joe Thorne, Schneider.).  Lockhart took over on the backstretch and passed 1000-meters (2:36.58) with Stroup trailing close behind.

With two laps remaining it was Lockhart, Thorne, Curtis and Stroup and at the bell lap the foursome continued in the same order respectively.

Curtis had the "best kick of his life" and ducked to the line just a tenth of a second before the Virginian. "We went out kind of fast" quipped Curtis, "Someone told me Shane goes out fast but I knew when Bobby Lockhart took over the race had begun."

John Jefferson, who had highlighted the night before in the boys DMR running a 4:06 1600m split, finished fourth. "I felt a little tight before the race, but in the race I felt good. I think I was less tight than I actually thought, I turned it on the last two laps, I may have had too much left."

"Perfect race plan" for Erin Donohue

NJ's Erin Donohue decided to run the indoor season instead of playing basketball, "I worked hard to make up what I missed (during previous winters) because of basketball." The multi-talented athlete, who also throws the javelin and shot put, took over the lead from WY's Alicia Craig at the bell lap to win in 4:15.15.

The pack opened the race with a 36.6 second 200 before VA's Kelley Otstott (doubling in the mile and 800) led at the quarter mile mark. Otstott continued to lead through 600 (1:50.0 in front of Craig and Donohue) and 800-meters (2:27.03).

The pack of three gained a fourth, MI's Linsey Blaisdell, all of who swept through 1000-meters in 3:03.75. Craig took over the lead with 400 meters to go (3:39.76) in front of Donohue, Otstott and Blaisdell before Donohue powered through the backstretch of the 7th lap and never looking back.

Blaisdell's teammate Nicki Bohnsack finished fifth overall after leading from start to finish in the first section.

"I came here to win like any other race, you can't worry about time," said Donohue, "It was a matter of time till I had the right race, it went out perfect for me, I had a lot of strength and speed."

Webb over Canadian Brannen in a meet record - 8:45.19

Ryan Deak lands new freshman national record - 9:29.10

"I'm satisfied but I wanted to break that (national) record."

In his familiar nonchalance Alan Webb stated that he wanted more. "The plan was to run 4:18 then 4:20. I was pretty tired, it's a longer race, but it helped because I knew he (Nathan Brannen) was there." Brannen will be Webb's roommate next fall at Michigan. "He signed that day and I signed that night," Brannen said.

Brannen saw Webb look up at the clock at the mile and speed up, "I just didn't have it today, he kept getting more and more distance on me. Second place is good, first is better but I am happy to be second behind Webb"

Freshman Ryan Deak from FL (below) became the first prep in indoor history to dip under 9:30 for 2 miles. "It hurt, hurt like anything," said Deak who ran 9:32 last spring as an eighth grader. He hopes to qualify at Raleigh after they lowered the Q-standard to 9:20. "It's all training, got to train hard," said Deak "Right now I am running 50 miles per week, running two speed sessions and a tempo run."

"It hurt, it hurt like anything."
