Highlights

'This is very special to me,' said Said Ahmed after his record 1000 meter run that was a shared experience with a packed crowd at Reggie Lewis Center.  The loudest cheers of the night started the instant the lean Boston English senior stepped on the track.  Many had obviously come just to see Ahmed run, and it didn't matter that the actual event was more a time trial than a race. Ahmed crossed the finish line 7 seconds ahead in 2:25.14, a New England Championship record by more than 2 seconds and a New England all time best.   It improved on the time that earlier this year made him the 6th fastest US prep in history at 1000 meters - just 0.59 behind sub-4 Virginian Alan Webb.  Ahmed's story and more pictures

At the same, another adoring crowd gathered in the far corner of Reggie Lewis Center and pressed against the shot put cage to watch Nashua NH sr Laura Gerraughty, whose 53-11 heave earlier this year is the US high school best ever, indoors or outdoors.  Before this year, there were only six indoor throws above 50 feet listed in Jack Shepard's HIGH SCHOOL TRACK record book.  That is just a night's work for Laura in the year 2001.  All six Gerraughty throws tonight were above 50 feet, with her winning 53-2.75 demolishing her own New England Championship record of 49-9.  She is so consistent lately that she said afterward, "It's time for a breakthrough."  Her goal is an incredible 55 feet.  "It's there," she said.  Photo story of Laura's big night
