1/13/01 PA Weekend 1/13Karl Dusen and Sean Duffy tangle in swift 3000, Dusen gets 8:51.8 PR at Haverford - Dominique Darden triples (55, 200, 400) at Dickinsonby Don Rich, publisher of DyeStat PA It's mid-season, and the athletes are beginning to crank it up a notch. But in the 3000 at Haverford College Sat. 1/13, two elite PA runners cranked it up a bit more than that. Karl Dusen, Central Bucks East, and Sean Duffy, Cardinal O'Hara, knew they were each other's best competition, so they aimed for each other and achieved PR's. The fast mid-season dual in the 3000 came in the Large School Division meet.
Dusen said he took it out hard early, "because I know Duffy has a good kick, and I didn't want to wait for it. And the plan worked." Dusen went through the mile in 4:43, but Duffy maintained contact, never more than 25 meters back. After the mile, Duffy closed over several laps, and actually took the lead for a lap-and-a-half. But with 375 meters to go, Dusen opened it up again, and won comfortably in a PR of 8:51.8. Duffy's goal for the race had been 9:15 after a sleepless week at a school retreat. However, that goal quickly fell by the wayside as he was forced to abandon any race plan just to maintain contact with Dusen. "I'm really pleased. That's my first time under 9:00. Karl ran a great race, and I just couldn't go with him." Both runners are anxiously looking forward to next Saturday and the Princeton Relays, as their respective teams will unveil their first full-strength DMR squads for this indoor season. Evenly Dwyer, Merion Mercy, took over US#1 in an event that is not her specialty - the 1500 at Colgate.
