The quality of performances from Pennsylvania athletes picked up a bit
at the YES (Year-End-Special) held Thursday, December 28 at Lehigh
University. The annual meet attracts many of the best from all schools
in the Greater Philadelphia area, plus a few from the western part of
PA.

Sponsored by the Track & Field Coaches Association of Greater
Philadelphia, Inc., the YES meet boasted a few national caliber
showings.

Boys PA # 1 performances were posted in the 60 meter hurdles (Matt Banz,
Bensalem, 8.47), the 200 (Troy Roberson, Tennent, 23.04), the 400
(Terrance Day, Simon Gratz, 50.22), the 800 (Steve Hall, Chester,
2:00.32), the Mile (Sean Duffy, Cardinal O'Hara, 4:27.57), the 3000
(Mark Mullelly, Upper Moreland, 9:08.56), the 4 x 200 (Simon Gratz,
1:33.18), the SMR (North Penn, 3:43.33), the 4 x 800 (North Penn,
8:17.92), and the Shot Put (Lou Samba, Norristown, 53-2).

Girls PA #1 performances were posted in the 60 Meter Hurdles (Cassie
Richards, Winchester-Thurston, 9:47), the 3000 (Julie Opet, Radnor,
10:38.10), the 4 x 200 (William Penn (1:43.53),the SMR ()William Penn,
4:15.7), and the Pole Vault (Amy Kolter, Phoenixville, 10-6).

Sprints and Dashs: (All times FAT)

In the 60 meter dash, Coatesville's Sundifu Dorley and William Tennent's
Troy Roberson were neck-and-neck, in Nike Indoor Classic (NIC)
qualifying times of 7.12 and 7.14, respectively. Those are the fastest
two PA times of the year. Roberson had won last year's 400 in 49.74, but
opted this year for the shorter distances, taking the 200 in 23.04 in
addition to his 2nd in the 60. The top three 60 meter hurdles
competitors all ran Dyestat Elite (DE) times, Matt Benz, Bensalem, in
8.47, Rennie Mills of Hatboro-Horsham, in 8.51, and Jesse Patterson of
Cheltenham, in 8.58. Simon Gratz's Terrence Day took the 400 in a NSI
(National Scholastic Indoor) and NIC qualifying time of 50.22.

NIC marks were posted in the 60 meter dash as Janea Bridgeford of Upper
Darby set a meet record with her 7.92. Melissa Mastrangelo of Nazareth
Academy was second with a 7.94. William Penn's Juanita Broaddus won the
200 in an NSI/NIC meet record time of 25.62. In the 400, Gorgeous Harper
had her only non-first place performance of the day, taking third in
59.77. Norristown's Courtney Clark also ran a DS Elite time, getting
second in 58.99. Penn Wood's Danielle Rodgers took first in an NSI/NIC
time of 58.50.

Without the long jump to compete in, Cassie Richards of
Winchster-Thurston, simply went out and won the 60 Meter Hurdles with
her 9.47. She finished sixth in the 400, skipping her second favorite
event, the 200, to avoid the same early season injury she had at this
meet a year ago.

Middle Distance and Distance:

Cardinal O'Hara's Sean Duffy nipped Karl Dusen, of CB East in the Mile
with his 4:27.57. Dusen ran 4:28 flat. And Upper Moreland's Mark
Mullelly ran a nice early season 3000 with his 9:08.56.

Radnor freshman Julie Opet showed that her XC potential translates well
to the track, running a meet record, NIC time of 10:38.10 in the 3000.
Stacey Muchal of Mid Valley was second, at 10:40.90, also an NIC time.

Relays:

The team of Speaks, Brit, Brown and Day of Simon Gratz set a new meet
record in the 4 x 200 with a DS Elite time of 1:33.18. North Penn took
both the Sprint Medley and 4 x 800 relays, the former in a meet record
of 3:43.33. Middle distance stars Dan Michael and Steve Craig ran both
relays. Their 4 x 800 was 8:17.92. William Tennent's 4 x 400 set a meet
record in 3:30.45.

Gorgeous Harper, William Penn, was the only girl on all three victorious
relays for her school. She was joined by Juanita Broaddus, Christina
Smith, and Christina Wright, in running a meet record 1:43.53 4 x 200,
with is also an NSI/NIC qualifying time.

Harper was joined by Tyeisha Thomas, Worthington, and Madonna Patterson
in winning the 4 x 400 in a DS Elite time of 4:07.8. She then teamed
with Smith, Patterson and Broaddus to set a meet record in the Sprint
Medley Relay, with their NSI/NIC time of 4:15.7.

Field Events

DS Elite performances were turned in by Norristown's Lou Samba and CB
East's Jim Kokas in the Shot Put, with their respective throws of 53-2
and 52-0.

Haverford's Mike Lang doubled, taking the High Jump with a 6-4 leap, and
the Triple Jump with his 43-4-1/2.

Phoenixville's Amy Kolter went 10-6 in the Pole Vault for a new PA #1,
meet record, and NSI qualifier. Dyestat Elite performances were turned
in by William Penn's Ashley Holiday in the Triple Jump with a jump of
36-5-3/4, and Avon Grove's Erie Finucane in the Shot Put, with a throw
