Mobile Meet of Champions

Greetings
from the Meet Director

DANNON-WINN DIXIE
"MEET OF CHAMPS"
APRIL 2001

The 2001 edition of the Dannon Winn Dixie Meet of Champions brings a new excitement as it becomes part of the United States Track Coaches Association initial US High School Track and Field Series.

The "Meet of Champs" is heading into its 9th year and has quickly become one of the premier early season prep meets. This meet started in 1993 as a tri-county meet and has expanded into attracting some of the top high school track and field athletes in the country. Many nationally ranked, all Americans, national record holders and state champions have competed in this meet. In the past, Char Foster, Erica Whipple, Shontel Powell, and Wendy's Heisman Athlete of the Year, Erin Droomgle, have competed on the girls side. The boys have had national record holder indoor athlete of the year Casey Combest, Olympic gold medalist Angelo Taylor, Olympic silver medallist Terrance Trammell, and Brendan Mahoney.

This is a two-day meet with the open division on Friday and the invitational division on Saturday. The open division involves 700 plus athletes and the invitational division has about 200 plus. The invitational involves an all finals format and invitations are issued to the top athletes in each event. Last year's meet on Saturday drew over 2,000 spectators. Many of the meet marks made the Track and Field News and DyeStat national event lists. Fernanda Blakley blazed a nation-leading 21.03 200 meters. All Americans Otis Harris, James Doaty, DeAndre Eiland, Maurice Robinson, and Rhonda White all participated in 2000!

Friday, April 6 at 4:00 pm, the open division will take place at UMS-Wright School, and Saturday, April 7 at 3:00 pm, the invitational division will take place at St. Paul's Episcopal School. The website, www.dyestat.com , will be in Mobile to cover the meet and report results live over the Internet. Joining Dannon-Winn Dixie as sponsors will be Nike, Comcast, Digiphone PCS, Sacro Wedgy, Mobile Infirmary Sports Care, Mobile Gas, and Papa John's Pizza. Athletes, fans, and coaches are again looking forward with anticipation to the 2001 Dannon-Winn Dixie Meet of Champions.

I look forward to having your athletes compete in this year's meet. Event participation in the invitational side of the meet is limited so all events are finals. Please confirm your invited athlete's participation to allow the events to have full participation. Awards will be presented to the top three in each invitational event. Enclosed is meet information. If you have any questions, please feel free to call me at 334-639-0303.

Yours in track,
