State Meet Preview and final Klim Poll of 2000by Jake Klim Rain, muck, mire, mud and wind; all elements associated now a day at the Class Meets. I think this makes it 3 out of 4 years where terrible weather has hindered the Class XC meet. In Eastern MA, runners were reporting up to 4 inches of slop in certain areas, in Central MA they claimed to have the same soggy conditions while in Western MA only a few puddles dampened the course. The weather hindered many while it helped others. Some runners can rough their way through horrendous conditions while others get eaten by it. The biggest meet of the year is less than a week away, after this it is either rest or footlocker regional at Van Cortland. Speaking of Van Cortland while you guys are all battling it out at Tufts on Saturday I will be battling it out at Vanny during IC4As, but without further ado here it is
DIVISION 1 Pre-race favorites Todd Glew (and St. Johns Prep) and Josh Palazola (and Gloucester) all won their respected titles while the rain battered down the park in Jamaica Plain and are without a doubt going to be battling it out next weekend: Individual vs. individual, team vs. team. Perhaps the runner who had the race of the day, or who at least I think stepped up, is Brookline's George McArdle. We have not heard too much about him, but in the back of my mind I knew that if he is any thing like his brother (Tom McArdle-#1 runner for Dartmouth and #2 or so in the Ivy League, 14:30ish for indoor 5k as a frosh) he could be a factor at Class As, and he most certainly was. What is up with Said Ahmed? Every time I think he is going to have a breakthrough race he doesn't. He did manage to qualify by the skin of his teeth, could his breakthrough race be next weekend? Expect Mike Piche to rebound and place in the top 5 at Grafton. Unless the OCL champ has seriously peaked, look for him to run with the leaders next week. What can be known about Jeff Bartoloni, who rises, falls then rises again from race to race? I see him up in the heat of the action as well. Rich Downing of the other St Johns (at Shrewsbury) once again defeated fellow rival Tim Creedon of Wachusett at the golf course in Gardner. What is this quote from the Globe mean when Coach Dunsky of G'Town says that the "other 14 schools will be racing for 3rd"? I believe that the race is going to be for 2nd, between the (insert mascot name here) of SJS and the Fishermen of Gloucester. Gloucester's lack of a 5th man will really hurt in their quest for another State Championship. How I constructed Ranking 50% Performance last weekend 25% Previous races (State Coaches, Wachusett Invite, Brown, CMI, Baystates, others) 25% Other factors (Basic knowledge, Coming off injury, weather, etc)
DIVISION 2 Austin Prep's Matt Pimentol recorded the fastest time of the day during the first race of the day at Franklin Park. His 16:12 earned him an individual berth at Grafton. It is going to be a battle between he and Graves for the title. Do not underestimate Pimentol, he hasn't had competition and it will be a very interesting race. If Pimentol falls off pace it will be during the last mile. Sophomore Eric Burgess was Cape Cod's #1 finisher getting the runners up title in the EMASS D4 race behind. As a freshman last year he ran close to 10 flat on the track, watch out for him this weekend and for the next 2 years. Oh and it is Rob Santoro not Steve. Rob's brother graduated, and I have been ranking his name where I should be ranking Rob's. Mohawk will win the title but East Bridgewater won't be far behind. The race for 2nd will be a battle though between 2 EMASS schools, a topic that was started a eons ago on the New England Dyestat forum. East Bridgewater simply has a better pack than Oliver Ames and therefor will place 2nd, I expect their top 5 to all be in the top 50, something that OA simply can not do. Whittinsville Christian will be the team that OA has to worry about, I see them possibly sneaking into 3rd, like EB, they have a number of runners who can break into the top 50.
Good Luck to all Jake Klim ([email protected])
