Boys - Girls

Meet held Saturday in Richmond at Three Chopt Park's Bandy Field. Course approximately 5,100 meters with about half of the race run on park grassland and the other half on neighborhood paved streets. The top four teams and top fifteen individuals in both the boys and girls races automatically qualified for the AAA state championships this Saturday, November 11 at the Great Meadow Course in The Plains. The girls race will be at 1:00 p.m. followed by the boys race at 1:45 p.m. Compiled by Pearl Watts.

Seniors Jeannie Addison and Ashley Seaton of the Thomas Jefferson Governor's School went one-two in the girls race to lead their squad to the girls team championship while on the boy's side Thomas Jefferson's John Piersol outdueled two time defending champion Austin Smith of Midlothian down the stretch to win the individual title with Smith's Midlo team dominating to win the boys team crown.

In the girl's race Addison took the lead from the start and held a three second advantage over her closest pursuer at the mile mark with her split of 5:49. Addison lengthened her lead to fifteen seconds at two miles, which she covered in 12:01 with Seaton having moved into second by that point. Addison then continiued to build on her lead and with her win by almost thirty seconds in 19:00.

Addison has certainly stamped herself as one of the co-favorites for the state title this Saturday at the Great Meadow Course in The Plains. Thomas Jefferson scored 67 points for the victory and placed their top four runners among the top sixteen finishers overall but barely held off a determined Douglas Freeman team led by junior Julia Siegel in third at 19:47. Freeman placed all five of their scoring runners among the top thirty finishers and were a close second with 69 points. L.C. Bird senior Jessica Ellis finished fifth in 19:55 to lead her team to third place with 83 points and the fourth and final state qualifying team was Manchester with 89 points paced by sophomore Mary Warman's fourth place finish in 19:54.

The boys team battle never materialized as coach Stan Morgan's squad put their top five runners among the top fifteen finishers to finish with an outstanding winning score of 36 points with Douglas Freeman easily taking the runnerup spot with 71 points.

Only five points separated the next three schools with T.J. scoring 114 points to nip Mills Godwin's 115 point fourth place total while Hermitage just missed a state meet spot with their 119 point fifth place finish.

The individual race was an exciting, close race from the start with senior Austin Smith of Midlothian, junior John Piersol from Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Dale sophomore Alex Tatu (third; 16:13) and Midlo junior Anthony D'Amato (4th; 16:16) among the leaders at the mile mark which was passed at 5:02. The quartet was still together at the two mile mark in clocking 10:22 but at 2.5 miles it was Smith and Piersol with a slight lead over Tatu and D'Amato. Smith and Piersol then went shoulder to shoulder for the next half mile, which is mostly uphill before Piersol pulled away coming around the last curve with about a 150 meter downhill to go and sprinted to the victory.
