Region II AA

a walk in the park for Lockhart

CHARLOTTESVILLE--For Handley's Bobby Lockhart, it was just another day in the park. Dardin-Towe Park, that is. That is where Lockhart continued his mastery in cross country with a Region II title Thursday. He flew through the 3.1-mile course in a record time of 15:29. Somehow, though, Lockhart was disappointed in his performance. "It wasn't very good at all," Lockhart said after the race. "I didn't run like I'm capable." He did run well enough to vault the Judges to a third-place finish with 103 points, good enough for a spot in next week's Group AA state meet at Great Meadow. Winning, as expected, was defending state champion Western Albemarle with a score of 40. The Warriors placed five runners in the top 15. Louisa was second with 96 points.

On the girls side Katie Endres of Potomac Falls, much like Lockhart ran away fron the field finishing in 19:24. Chelsea Henderson of Stonebridge was a distant second finishing in 19:43.

VA AA Region I

Record-breaking Bryce Ruiz wins Region I crown Ann Lee Cole wins exciting battle with Stacy Potter

Williamsburg-Bryce Ruiz seems to only be getting stronger as the cross country season nears climax. Ruiz a junior at Jamestown high school set the William and Mary course record on Thursday running 15:03. The old record 15:05 was set in 1994 by former Arkansas star Seneca Lassiter of Lafayette high school. Ruiz and Alan Webb of South Lakes high school in Reston, are the only two Virginia runners that have had every race this year under the 16:00 mark. Ruiz took control from the start and never looked back. Alan Carr of York High school came 16 seconds later in 15:19.

The girls race was the most exciting of the day with Ann Lee Cole of Nottoway and Stacy Potter of Massaponax running together and changing leads many times throughout the 5k race. With 50 yards to go Cole put on a kick but she was followed closely by Potter with a kick of her own. Cole was able to win the race in an outstanding time of 18:53 to Cole's 18:54.
