The Klim Poll 10/24

Division 1 - Division 2

by Jake Klim

Thanks for everyone who has sent me input and results regarding these rankings. Please send me league meet results if you have them.

The lists are a bit more organized this week after receiving a number of emails from fellow MA-XC gurus pertaining to results and data. Still I am basing this poll off of large meet performances; everyone knows that #20 may beat #14 then lose to #16 but we have to realize what we think may happen when all three and then some meet on a course that neither has ever run before. This pole is as accurate as what I think the outcome of a race may be when the top 20 race at the same time on the same course. For in the sport of cross country, again as everyone knows, courses are different, runners have bad/good days and weather conditions are pending. Another thing that one must remember is that invitationals are more important than dual meets. In a dual meet for example Joe Jerk may beat Chris Chump by 20 seconds but in an invitational, a meet that "counts" in big team score, Chump may beat Jerk by 10 seconds and gain a higher ranking.

Commentary

The Prep looks even stronger than I originally thought. They seem to have a massive team with their #2-#5 interchangeable at different meets. Shrewsbury moves into the #2 spot after considering the fact that their tight bunch should move in front of the Almighty Fishermen of Gloucester who seem to lack such depth in their top 7. But the Fishermen always surprise us every year, is their reign over? I am afraid so.

This past weekend also saw the return of English star Said Ahmed. If he is in shape he will be a serious factor at the All State meet next month and to quote Said with an interview from the Boston Globe he states "if it comes down to a sprint, I am confident." He should be, he has run 1:53 for 800 meters.

Commentary

I think I owe a bigger apology to the Division 2 runners for short changing them last week by only ranking the top 10. I did some more research and came up with the top 20 that will stay until the duration of the season. Mohawk looks even stronger than last week after another win at the CMI division 3 race. East-Bridgewater was not too far behind the defending state champs, actually only 7 points, but I think that the power invested in OA will separate these two schools at Grafton. It is apparent that Mr. Graves wants competition and may not get any until Footlocker Regionals at Vanny, and who knows a trip to Florida may not be out of Graves' range.

Good Luck
