Cincinnati District Meets

Cincinnati Powerhouses Heating Up at Districts

from an Ohio correspondent

October 21, 2000 - On a cool Saturday morning, some of Ohio's finest, girls and boys, met for the District races in Cincinnati. Teams included three-time defending state champion Colerain High School (US#12 in The Harrier) on the girls side, while the boys showcased US #11 Cincinnati LaSalle, second only in the city and state to number one-ranked Cincinnati St. Xavier. Because of the large number of teams in Cincinnati, both the girls and boys districts are separated into two different districts.

The Colerain girls dominated in their race, winning by over 30 points. "There's no team that can match that," said the usually humble Colerain coach, Ron Russo. "I've told the team all year they can be better than last year's team. This performance today was almost unparalleled." Lindsay Zinn of Liberty Township Lakota East clocked the fastest girls time of 17:39, thwarting last year's state champion Chelsea Homan of Cincinnati Anderson, who ran to second place in 18:03.

The boys races also saw impressive showings. Top-ranked St. Xavier "pounded (league rival and Ohio #4 Cincinnati Elder) into the ground like a tent-stake," noted one observer, 40-77. In the second race, LaSalle, recovering from a staggering defeat at last week's Greater Catholic League Championships, which saw St. Xavier place six runners in the top nine en route to a 23-46 blowout, won handily, scoring only 35 points. Individually, LaSalle junior Allen Bader clocked the fastest time of the day in 15:26. Bader, considered one of the two favorites to win state, watched his rival and main competition Andy Wietmarschen, a senior from St. Xavier, cruise to a 15:33 victory in the first race. This coming week the Colerain girls should cruise to another Southwest Ohio Regional Championship, with Lakota East's Lindsay Zinn the favorite individually. LaSalle and St. Xavier will meet head on for the second time this year to duel for the top team spot, while their top runners, Bader and Wietmarschen, will clash for the individual Regional title.
