One Month until GraftonMassachusetts Cross Country Rankings10/17/00 - Division 1 - Division 2 by Jake Klim Division 1Individuals Team Commentary There is only 1 month until the big meet at Tufts. Those who ventured to Baystates showed what they could do in the 'early' season while others ventured to the state meet site at Grafton to check out the course in style. Some fine performances at Baystates including the races by Mike Piche and new comer Abdulgami Abdi. The McIntire Invitational was very slow this year but look for Mike Piche to roll with some competition (He had a 4:42 first mile during a duel meet at Falmouth and perhaps could be MA's greatest improvement since last season). Could Abdi be another Somalian sensation? Zach Habtemichael should not be over looked after matching Abdi's time in the Large School Race with 16:22. Jeff Way, only a Junior, from Cape Cod does have the 3rd fastest time thus far at Franklin Park and will only get better as the season progresses. Another underclassman, Todd Glew, rolled to a second place finish in Grafton behind Mohawk's Neil Graves. Teammates Dan Thirbeault and Dennis Sheehan were not far behind making St. Johns Prep the favorite for this years trophy. Gloucester always seems to pull their army together near the end of the season but the ways things look right now, they can not take down the Prep. Josh Palazola represented MA at Van Cortland Park in the Bronx by winning the Section G race in the Manhattan Invitational with a time of 13:07, missing being put into the infamous Red Book (For breaking 13:00) by 8 seconds. Division 2Massachusetts State Schoolboy Ranking 10/18 Division Two Individuals Team Commentary Only going ten deep in the individual ranking because not many D2 runners have cracked under 16:45 at Franklin Park. Neil Graves guided Mohawk to a trophy at the Columbus Day Invitational as well as earning top individual honors. Look for Graves and Mohawk to repeat as champions, if Graves does lose it will be an upset of sorts. Bill Stanley, who shows signs of great improvement over last year, leads Mansfield.
