Lauren Bricker joins the elite
- and enjoys the scenery

After a race when shouts of "No, No" rolled across the Penn State golf course as a driving rain pelted 250 girls trying to run, Lauren Bricker was asked what she like about cross country.  "I love the scenery," she said. "In track there is nothing to look at."

The Hempfield PA sophomore has good reason to enjoy the scenery this year.  She is running a minute or more faster than last year.  On 9/16 she ignored the rain that felt like hail and led every step of the Spiked Shoe Invitational 9/16.  Her time was 18:30, which was 53 seconds faster than her 6th place finish in 1999.  And the conditions were 30 seconds slower according to some runners.  Here is how it went.

"I was watching one girl -- I don't know her name, I think she won last year -- and wanted to keep up with her.  I broke away at about a mile and a half and just kept pushing it."  The other girl was Middletown MD soph Emily Buzzell, who did in fact win this race last year.

Emily and Randy Buzzell try to keep pace with 1000 meters to go.

Middletown #3 Rocky Morgan (R) moves up in the woods.
