Northern Hills InvitationalA warmup for two nationally ranked girls teams entered in the Great American Race of Champions turned into a rout for Campbell County WY.� Coach Orville Hess' Camels ran 1-6-7-8-9 for a 31-50 score over Bowman SD, a South Dakota state champion 20 of the last 21 years.� Alicia Craig led the Camels with a record 14:20 4k tour in 15-20 mph gusts, finishing 52 seconds ahead of her own course record from 1999. (Feature on Alicia Craig) Details from Orville Hess:� The Campbell County High School cross-country teams ventured into the Northern Hills Invitational on Thursday, August 31, 2000. They were met with gusty winds of 15-25 mph and some strong competition. On the girls side Bowman, ND (ranked 14th nationally), Dickinson, ND (a top ND team) and Rapid City Stevens (defending SD state champions) presented the main challenge. Individually, Alicia Craig (3rd Footlocker Nationals, '99) and Penny Splichal (4:59 and Golden West entry) were set to dual. When the dust settled Alicia Craig led the Camels to a 1-6-7-8-9 finish to win the meet with 31 points. Bowman scored 51 pts., Dickinson scored 80 and Rapid City Stevens scored 104. Alicia Craig broke the 4 KM. course record record she set last year of 15:12.4 when she ran 14:20.0. Penny Splichal was second at 15:15. Order of finish for the Camels: On the boy's side Brad Lowry of Pierre upset Eric Gumstrup of RCS with a 16:26 to 16:27 win on the 5 KM course. Campbell County youth ran like veterans and placed 4-6-7-11-13 to win with 41 points over Rapid City Stevens (defending state champs in SD) with 62 points.
