US Olympic Trials

16 Preps Enter

by John Dye

Sixteen high school athletes were good enough and brave enough to test themselves against the Olympians in the US Olympic Trials.  None is likely to make the team (only the top 3 do), but we applaud their effort and report their results here.

7/14 - 7/15 - 7/16 - 7/17 - 7/20 - 7/21

The preps at Sacramento:

CA jr Monique Henderson 400m
VA sr Sheena Johnson 400 hurdles
CA so Angel Perkins 400m
ND jr Briona Reynolds discus
MO sr Muna Lee 100m

OLYMPIC TRIALS - FRI 7/21

The last four preps entered in the Trials dropped out.  Three HS girls in the pole vault -- Stacie Manuel, Amy Linnen, and Samantha Shepard -- all no heighted in the preliminary round.  The opening height of 13-2.25 was enough to whittle the big field down to 16 finalists.

It was the same story in the men's high jump for Paul Klemic, who went three and out at 2.20m (7'02.50).

OLYMPIC TRIALS - THU 7/20

No high school athletes competed

OLYMPIC TRIALS - MON 7/17

Kate Polansky 6th in javelin finals

The South Eugene OR  sr improved on her preliminary mark by 8 inches to 174-2, good for sixth place in the javelin finals.  She was 12 feet behind the third and last qualifier for the Olympic team.

The Trials have rest days Wednesday and Thursday, resuming Thursday.

OLYMPIC TRIALS - SUN 7/16

Monique 8th in 400 meter final;
Kate Polansky 4th in javelin prelim

Monique Henderson was the 8th qualifier for the finals and that is where she finished in the finals.  Running in lane 1, she lost the stagger quickly and trailed throughout, finishing in 51.79.  That was the slowest of her three Olympic Trials times, but she is still the only US high school girl under 52 seconds this year and she did it four times.

High schoolers fared well in the women's javelin prelim, headed by Kate Polansky's fine 173-6 effort, 4th best of 12 qualifiers for the finals at 6:45 pm (Pacific) Monday.  Kate, the US#2 prep this year, was one of four women in the 170s behind leader Lynda Blutreich 190-9.  Three more preps competed:  US#1 Kendra Wecker 159-1 (16th), Sarah Malone 156-11 (18th), and Leslie Erickson 141-0 (26th).

In the women's discus prelims, US prep leader Briona Reynolds had a best of 143-6 for 21st.

OLYMPIC TRIALS - SAT 7/15

Monique Henderson makes 400 meter finals; Muna Lee, Sheena Johnson out

Monique Henderson improved her time to 51.23 and claimed the 8th and final spot in the 400 meter finals, scheduled for 2:35 pm Sunday Pacific time.  She might even get on TV, now that the 100 meter races which hogged Saturday air time on NBC are over.  The top three finalists were under 51 seconds, which is the territory Henderson invaded with her all-time best prep mark of 50.74 in the California State Finals June 3.

Here are the results of the 400m semis:

Muna Lee was overmatched in the 100 meter semis, finishing eighth in a heat that included Inger Miller and Gail Devers.  Lee's time of 11.67 was off her first round 11.36 and her Foot Locker Outdoor winning 11.39.

Sheena Johnson just missed advancing in the 400 meter hurdles, finishing third in her first round heat with a time of 57.35.  The top 2 in each heat and the next 6 fastest advanced to the semis, and 56.86 was the last qualifier.  Sheena improved on her Foot Locker winning 57.55, but was a bit off her Jr Nationals winning 56.82.
