10/7/00 at Portage MI

Portage Cross Country Invitational

The Portage Cross Country Invitational began as a concept between two rival high schools, Portage Central and Portage Northern. Both schools wanted to provide an opportunity for student-athletes to participate in a cross country invitational that is festive and first class in every aspect. We began in 1998 with the support of Gazelle Sports, a local running store, and Reebok.  The sponsors provide every varsity athlete with a free Portage Invitational t-shirt. Our first year we drew 60 high school teams and 18 middle school teams from across the state.  The success of the first two years have parlayed into the 2000 Portage Cross Country Invitational, expected to draw nearly 230 teams, and approximately 3500 student-athletes.

The goal each year has been to bring in as many of Michigan's top teams to compete against each other. Having a program like Rockford and other teams with outstanding individuals commit to running at Portage has been a large attraction for many other teams, as the 1999 Girls Division I race had 6 of the top 8 state finalists competing. The races look to be even better for each division in 2000.
