Which were the best states at FLO?
New Jersey Boys
and California Girls
win FLO "team" titles
by John Dye
If you count each state as a team, you can score the meet by state and
declare an unofficial team championship. DyeStat did this with scoring to
8th place (10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1).
The winners: New Jersey boys and California girls.
Boys - New Jersey rang up 113.5 points, followed
by the expected powers: Texas 83, New York 77, Virginia 68.5, California 67,
Florida 56, Michigan 47, and Pennsylvania 46. New Jersey scored well
across the board except in distance events and got first place finishes from
Paul Klemic in HJ and Camden in the 4x400 relay (Lenape 2nd). Boys
scoring by state
Girls - California 84 nosed out New York and
Ohio, who tied for second with 82 points, in a race that was closer than it
should have been. California might have doubled its point score if its
non-entrants were present: Berkeley, Long Beach Wilson, San Lorenzo
Valley, Lashinda Demus, Alejandra Barrientos, Monique Henderson, Angel Perkins,
and Laura Chen. This group would have been favorites or co-favorites in
the 200, 400, Mile, 400H, 4 Mile relay, SMR, and DMR -- events in which
California only scored five points. Henderson and Perkins are ranked 1-2
in the country in both the 400 and 200.
Girls Scoring by State
The race walk was not scored, because it is not widely competed in HS
meets. Virtually all the points would have gone to Maine and New
York. Hammer was included, because more states are represented, and it did
not influence the team standings.
At least one point was scored by 37 states in boys events, and 28 in girls.
